Ce CS ..-, "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 18, 1997 -5 Store owners banking on instant cash machine By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Determined not to give up, the owners of a local convenience store and gas bar are continuing to urge bank officials to install a bank machine in their store. Since taking over the Manchester Country Convenience and Esso Gas Bar in December 1995, owners Paul and Leisha Giddings say that they have been besieged by requests from customers for a bank machine, up to and over 30 a day at peak times. While requests for an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) have been flatly denied by most of the Paul and Lelsha Gid- dings feel like they are doing everything they can to try and get a bank machine at their store and gas bar. With close to 30 customers looking for a bank ma- chine daily, the couple has contacted every bank to see if any are Interested In Installing one at the corner of Highways 12 and 7A. @he Poul Peren Stac halk] Sam Spring is Here! Even with over 14,000 customers a week doing business at the store, The Bank of Nova Scotia, The National Bank and The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce have all given the Giddings a resounding no. "They say it's a risk to bring a bank machine in here; there's not enough traffic. We have plenty of customers at the store who want a machine but they don't think that we can meet their minimum numbers," said Ms. Giddings. Of the banks available, she says that only The Royal and Toronto Dominion banks are show- ing interest in installing a bank machine at the corn- er of Highways 7A and 12. Both banks, however, state that a minimum number of transactions 'must be completed per month, or a fee will have to be paid. According to the Giddings, the Royal Bank would like to see 200 trans- actions per day, while the TD bank is looking for 150, and if the monthly total is not met, a fine of $500 may be issued. In an effort to prove to the banks that a bank machine would be used, the Giddings collected over 1,000 signatures on a peti- tion in seven days, stating that an ATM would defi- SCUGOG'S 9TH ANNUAL FREE GIANT EASTEREG HUNT SUNDAY, MARCH 30TH On Queen St. ¢ Starts at 1:00 p.m. Rain or Shine ¢ prizes for all THE NUTTY CHOCOLATIER nitely be used. To satisfy their custom- ers the owners of the store and gas bar also started to offer cashback on Interact purchases, but soon found themselves running out of money. "We encountered some problems when we started giving people money on Interact because some were taking out too much money," explained Ms. Giddings.
