Pianist Gene DiNovi was born in Brooklyn 67 years ago and grew up in New York City. His first major engagement came in 1944, when, at the age of just 16, he was asked by Dizzy Gillespie to sit in with his band. The opportunity to play with Charlie Parker soon followed, and in the next few years, he was pianist and arranger for Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich and Boyd Rayburn, and he recorded with Artie Shaw. After the Big Band peri- od, DiNovi became musi- cal director for Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett, Lena Horne and Dinah Shore, among others. Following his years in New York, DiNovi went to Hollywood and became pi- anist-arranger for the Danny Thomas-produced television programs: Dick Van Dyke, Andy Griffith, etc. In the early 1970s, while on tour with Car- men McRae, DiNovi decid- ed to settle in Toronto. In 1990, DiNovi had the opportunity to return to his jazz roots through invi- tation to play at the Onta- rio Pavillion at Expo 1990 in Osaka, Japan. This led to engagements at Japa- nese jazz clubs, which in turn led to his first trio re- cording, "Precious Mo- ment." In the last three years DiNovi has been performing regularly with his trio and has been back to Japan several times. DiNovi's 1994 recording "Renaissance of a Jazz Master," with Terry Clarke on drums and Da- vid Young on bass, was re- leased in 1994 and was named one of the top jazz recordings of the year by the Toronto Star. Gene DiNovi's trio 1n- cludes drummer Barry Elmes, who has performed + twice at Town Hall 1873, along with Patrick Collins on bass.
