NT iN CT 2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 1, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Whitby store convicted of selling to minors Region health unit cracks down on tobacco sales By Angela Drew Port Perry Star Durham Region's Health Department has begun laying charges against merchants who sell cigarettes to minors. Last Monday (March 24) a store in Whitby was prohibited from selling or storing tobacco on the premises for six months, and ordered to post a sign alerting customers of the conviction. The sales pro- hibition is automatic for a second offense under the Tobacco Control Act. The owner of Select Movie Superstore on Dundas St. East was charged on two separate occasions for selling J unior === Kindergarten [°] The Durham Board of Education tobacco to minors under the age of 19. Bob Rockbrune of the Durham Region Health Department said not imposing a sales ban after the first charge allows the vendor to redeem themselves to not let it happen again. "We're looking for peo- ple to follow the laws and if they're not going to, then it's our job to enforce it," he says. The prohibition bans the sale or storage of tobacco in the store for six months. During that time the vendor is required to post signs which state that they've been convicted of a tobac- EY will implement Junior Kindergarten in all its elementary schools beginning in September 1997 if approval for the program is received from the provincial Education Improvement Commission. Pre-registration for Junior Kindergarten will begin Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at 9:30 a.m. by telephone. Parents are urged to call their local elementary school to pre-register their children for September classes. Eligible children must be four years of age by December 31, 1997. If the number of pre-registered children exceeds the accepted class limit, some students may be bused to another school. If your child's name already has been placed on a Junior Kindergarten list at a school, you still must go through the pre-registration process on April 15 to reserve a placement > in the class. co offence, said Mr. Rockbrune. "The stores are given a second chance to redeem themselves if they're going to go and do it again, then yes, I think the penalty is very fair," he said. Two other vendors in Durham -- one in Bowmanville and the other in Ajax -- will be facing an automatic pro- hibition if convicted for a second offence at the end of this month, said Mr. Rockbrune. Altogether more than 65 Tobacco Control Act charges have been laid by the Durham Health Department in the last CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR GETTING BACK TOGETHER: In an effort to boost registration numbers, Mayor Howard Hall personally delivered his form and cheque for the 125th Reunion to Port Perry High School last Tuesday. In fact, the costs for providing the program this year will be covered by reserve funds, and are to be assumed by the province next year. There is no impact on taxpayers. The Star regrets the error. Restaurant was omitted Information provided by the region health unit led to the name of one local restaurant being excluded from a recent story about awards for smoke-free environments. Pizza Delight in Port Perry was among the local recipients of the region's Lifestyle Achievement Award for voluntarily restricting smoking. Sorry about the oversight.
