10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 8, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice . Uxbridge man drowns An Uxbridge man died on the weekend when his snowmobile plunged through the ice of a Muskoka area lake. Michael MacKenzie, 29, was out on a night run with two friends when he fell through the thin ice of Go Home Lake, northwest of Bracebridge. Police divers pulled the man's body from the frigid lake after nearly eight hours of searching. Mr. MacKenzie's two friends did not fall through and attempted to pull him out. Unsuccessful, the two went to shore for help. Married with one son, Mr. MacKenzie was a self- employed carpenter. According to OPP, signs had been posted warning people of weak ice throughout most of the winter because of mild weather. The Durham Board of Education ' will implement Junior Kindergarten in all its elementary schools beginning in September 1997 if approval for the program is received from the provincial Education Improvement Commission. Pre-registration for Junior Kindergarten will begin Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at 9:30 a.m. by telephone. Parents are urged to call their local elementary school to pre-register their children for September classes. Eligible children must be four years of age by December 31, 1997. "It's not normal to have two cabinet ministers and three MPs out at a nomi- nation meeting, but we want to endorse Mr. Shep- herd on his running for MP of Durham Region." Mr. Irwin said the gov- ernment is mounting a campaign at a time when voters are fickle, and often vengeful. "Governments today are like TVs; they can be flicked in and flicked out.
