"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 8, 1997 - 15 Caring community saved 'Ditch' After being hit by a vehicle and left to die last June, a mixed-breed pooch has found himself part of a Blackstock family. Found in a ditch on Old Scugog Rd. by some neigh- borhood children , the injured dog was brought to a local veterinarian by Chelan and Scott Berry. They soon discovered that it would take more money than they had to allow the stray dog to walk again. "We didn't know if we could keep him or how bad he was hurt so we took him to the vet," said Mrs. Berry last week. "After the x-rays the vet estimated that it would cost around $2,000 to treat him and we didn't think that we could've afforded it. We had just paid $4,000 to get our doberman fixed after he was hit by a car and we were trying to rebuild our house after a fire." That was when the Berrys issued a plea to the public through The Port Perry Star and other local media, asking for help in a letter to save the dog they had named Ditch. With the help Paulmac's Pet Food Plus in Port Perry, a fundraiser was held and $2,000 dollars was raised. The cost of Ditch's operations cost approximately $1,700 and the remainder of the funds was donated to The Humane Society. Now, close to one year after the accident, Ditch is Poulan RO Give Your Yard The Pro Approach! + SAVE®5-%10 , Lawn Tractors + On SPRING TUNE-UP Lawnmowers & Tractors All Makes and Models *- 300K EARLY~ Ends April 30th, 1997 Models range from 11.5hp to 22hp * Heavy duty Dana Transaxie/ Hydro Gear Hydrostatic Drive Systems allow snow blade, snow blower plus grass cutter accessory sdepabic [fl 7A TO PORT PERRY I> ROSE ST. He shows hardly a trace of his injuries. "He had a broken femur and he had a hip totally dislocated. He also has dysplacia in both of hips, but that won't affect him until he is old and arthritic," said Mrs. Berry of Ditch. She figures he's a two-and-a-half to three-year-old part hound, sheltie and beagle. Weighing just nine pounds after the accident, Ditch now tips the scales at 21 pounds. Mrs. Berry admits that she has a soft spot for way- ward pups. "We never paid for any of our animals; they were all strays. The vet says I'm a sucker because of the animals I take in, but they're well worth it. "Other people had offered to adopt Ditch but after being with him everyday during the operation and after, I couldn't give him up," she said. "Everyone was great. Paulmac's had this big sidewalk sale, which helped raise a lot of money... It's a shame it doesn't happen more often to help the pet population," Mrs. Berry said. "We were really amazed at the dona- tions we got during that week that saved Ditch, and I want to thank everyone who saved his life."
