"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 29, 1997 - 11 'Green Streets' grant accepted by township Funds will plant 200 trees here By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star It takes green to make green. And Scugog Township will get a bit greener this year, as one of 39 Green Street communities in Canada. Some 200 new trees will go into the ground on mu- nicipal and private prop- erty'in all areas of Scugog this spring with financial help provided jointly by Green Streets Canada and the township. Last Monday evening (April 21) Holly Maxfield, representing Green Streets and the Ontario Forestry Association, pre- sented Scugog with a cheque for $2,500. The township will 'match that amount from the budgets of the parks and roads de- partments. And all of it will go to- wards the tree planting program under the direc- tion of volunteer Joan Graham of Blackstock, who has worked for sever- al years to make sure Scu- gog continues to have new trees planted each spring. Ms. Maxfield said the fact Scugog matched the $2,500 grantis a "very pos- itive step, a wonderful model for other municipal- ities. "I hope (Scugog) will continue to provide leader- ship in this area. This is a catalyst for future tree planting (programs) in Canada," she told town- ship councillors. Tree planting in urban and rural areas not only adds beauty, she said; trees are great for the en- vironment to help control erosion, and counter pollu- tan tsin the air. - The cheque was pre- sented to the township JOreen Streets ¥ Ho Canady x 2 . Scugog has received a $2,500 grant toward the purchase of trees for the municipality from Green Streets Canada. Presenting a cheque Monday night was Green Streets representative Holly Maxfield (left). it was accepted by vol- unteer Joan Graham, Mayor Howard Hall, and parks and rec chair Karen Puckrin. Monday night and the next day, Mrs. Graham was busy picking up a couple of truckloads of trees. The program will mean replacement of 20 mature trees along municipal road allowances, 15 ma- ture trees in lakefront and neighborhood parks, and about 200 smaller trees distributed for planting on private property. Mrs. Graham said she became involved as a vol- unteer in the tree pro- gram several years ago af- ter noticing what she described as a lack of new trees coming up in rural areas of Cartwright, where she lives. She enjoys this work, saying "everybody should volunteer to do something, thisis mine.'
