"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" oo EEE AAC PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 29, 1997 - 15 Epsom Indy tears up the track this year on June 21 Race fans will be in for a treat when the second annual Epsom Indy Soap Box Derby is held this June. Close to 100 competitors are expected to line up for this year's running of the Indy on Marsh Hill Rd. on June 21. The inaugural running of last year's race was put on by the village's local church as a fundraiser for the community. When more than 70 partici- pants entered in last year's Indy, the organizers knew they had something. "We had an excellent show- ing last year by the competitors and must have had close to a couple hundred spectators. It was a great day," said Gail Kerry, an organizer of the event. 100 entrants allowed With such a good response to last year's running, organiz- ers have capped the number of racers at 100 this year, which will be a small increase from the 70 racers they had last year. There will be four classes for racers to enter in: Primary (6-9); Junior (10-14); Senior (15+); and Open Class (6+). Prizes are awarded for speed and design. Racers must pay a $5 regis- tration fee and while more than one driver is permitted to drive a car, no two drivers can pilot the same car in one race. The race will commence at 10 a.m. on a hilly portion of Marsh Hill Rd. by the school, running north to south, which will be closed at 8 a.m. Money raised from last year's Indy was used to pur- chase trees and and a tent for the village. An inspection date for the soap box derby is set for June 7 and the re-inspection date for the race cars is June 14. Boys, girls welcome Mrs. Kerry says that the number of participants is split down the middle -- boys and girls -- and that the Epsom Indy is a good chance for par- ents to spend time with their kids. "This race allows parents to spend the day with their chil- dren, which the parents really appreciate. "Also, the neighbors around the area of the race are in favor of the event too. They help with the organization, put out their trash cans to help collect, garbage and they get to enjoy the events early sometimes as well. Everyone has a great time," she said, explaining that some racers get some practice In as early as two weeks before the competition. Anyone who wants more information about the event or race rules can contact Gail Kerry at 985-9701 or Darlene at 985-8094. KFA meeting By Steve Wickens The Scugog Chapter of the Kawartha Fisheries Association will be hold- ing its upcoming meeting on Thursday (May 1) at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of St. John's Presbyterian Church in Port Perry. Naturalist and noted wildlife photographer Ken Carmichael will present a slide presentation on marsh birds. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the wide varie- ty of birds that live on and around Lake Scugog, their habitat requirements, and problems that individual species are currently fac- ing around our lake. - Mr. Carmichael will also be discussing what we can do to help provide the _ best possible habitat, in- cluding building nesting boxes, for assorted birds living in our area. We are also expecting an update on the progress of both our shoreline map- ping project, and initial re- sults from our walleye Fi Rediscover i ey Discover The Value Of The New '98 Winds nership with the Port A i 2 Perry BassMasters.
