» "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 6, 1997 - 15 Making waves Scugog officer is preparing for the World Games By Chris Hall Port Perry Star With a lifetime of prac- tice under his belt, a Port Perry man says he's up to the challenge of competing against the best in the upcoming World Police and Fire Games this sum- mer. A Port Perry resident for the past 17 years, Dave Mann is prepared to com- pete in Calgary as a rep- resentative for the Durham Regional Police in the waterskiing events. "I've been waterskiing all my life, but I didn't compete until three or four years ago. I'm hoping for a medal in the slalom, that's my best chance I think," said the 44-year- . old 26 Division officer, who will also be competing in the tricks and barefoot sections The Games are held every two years. They were in Australia in 1995, and will be staged in Sweden in 1999. Mr. Mann is happy about attending the games here in Canada. "This is my first time going to the Games because Calgary is pretty close compared to the other hosts; 1 couldn't real- ly afford to fly to Australia two years ago," said the officer, a employee of the Durham Region Police ~ Service for 23 years. "I've been training recently in Winter Haven, Florida, at Ski Away Water School doing my trick s and barefoot. Lucky Lowe, the former open men's world champ, was there as well," he said, adding that he may compete in other Ontario and Eastern Canada championships, perhaps even the Canadian championships. The World Police and Fire Games are open to any police officer or fire- fighter in the world. There will be close to 100 events taking place including hockey, arm wrestling, tug-of-war, cycling and triathlon between June 27 and July 25. With the high cost of participating, the local officer has landed spon- sorship from two Canadian organizations, and even one American corporation. While he says that the Durham Police will prob- Don't Miss An Issue SUBSCRIBE to the PORT PERRY STAR Start yours today - call 985-7383 ably pay for part of his flight and maybe some spending money, he will also be sponsored by Haugen's BBQ in Manchester and Iconn Sports Ltd., an American company in Washington with some new products. In order to stay in shape for upcoming event, the officer says that he enjoys running, bike riding, and hockey. During his slalom event he will find himself behind a boat going about 34 miles per hour, where he will weave in and out of mark- ers set up in the water. At the same time they'll shorten the length of his tow-rope, making turning increasingly more diffi- cult. "I've been to a couple of small tournaments and fared well and other people have told me that I should compete more because I'm good enough so I thought I'd go this time and take a crack at it." CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR Port Perry resident Dave Mann will be flying out to Calgary at the end of next month to participate in the World Police and Fire Games. He is entered in three waterskiing events.
