PRN EEN 8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 6, 1997 By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Fungus and mold in the wood floor of the Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club can be a health haz- ard, says a consultant's report. The hazard to those using the building comes from "volatile organic component emissions,' according to a report by engineer D. L. Baxter of Totten Sims Hubicki, a consulting company hired by the Township to examine suspected rot in the wooden floor of the 12-year-old club on Reach Road. Mr. Baxter and Township building inspector Paul Milligan carried out an examina- tion of the floor February 25 and found extensive softness, rot and fungus Report calls building mold a health hazard in the timber joists to the point of "severe dete- rioration" in certain areas. Similar conditions were found in the timber header caused by heavy condensation. Timber sill plates are in poor condition and a main timber beam is described as being in "fair condition." The report is now in the hands of Scugog Township council, which is expected to make some kind of a decision on repairs at its meeting coming up next Monday. Baxter estimates fix- ing the damage will run to $15,000 to $20,0000. But this amount could be reduced if the work can be done on a volun- teer basis by members of the Lawn Bowling Club. According to Roland Lapins, an organizer for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), employees of the local company voted 86-58 against the imple- mentation of a union last Tuesday. While he said he didn't know the exact reasons the union was turned down, he did hazard a few guesses. "It's hard to gauge why they didn't vote for one, I can only give my opinion, but I suspect that most people felt the situation there was satisfactory without a union in the mix," said the UFCW offi- cial. He said that employees from Mother Jackson's contacted the union last October. Mr. Lapins also said that during the course of the union vote manage- ment at Mother Jackson's was understanding of efforts to establish a union. "The management there was rather fair. They did what we expected them to do. They talked to their workers, held mass meetings; they stayed within the bound- aries of the Labor Relations Act. "Overall they were fair and we had no com- plaints," said the union organizer, who added that more than 65 per cent of the union applications are voted in across Canada.
