The crop specialist said that while Scugog may have been hit with a large amount of rainfall last Thursday, some areas only had their fields dampened -wheel AM/FM I -- ROARS 2IASNSISTANCH by the storm. oo "Overall the region 1s still pretty dry. Rain show- ers may pop up here and there...everyone seems to be getting a few drops but nothing really too big, said Mr. Moore. A problem farmers are having, he says, is that there is not enough mois- ture for controlling ram- pant weeds. "The fields are really dry right now and the weed control programs need rain. They are still not fully active. They are a herbicide and while the ground is a little damp and they are partially working, they're still not totally activated." High temperatureslast week have helped the local hay crops, most of which have now been cut. Farmers are also wor- rying less over their corn crops, said Mr. Moore. "Corn is coming up pret- ty good now; it is either emerged from the ground or just about there now. Some farmers are still planting their soybean crop but they should just about be completed by now as well; crops should just about all be in by now except for a few fields." One nagging concern that Mr. Moore says could cause problems is forage seeds. "We are still particu- larly worried about forage seeds or hay seeds. They are planted pretty shallow in the ground -- about a- quarter-of-an-inch -- and the ground is still pretty dry so they may not be germinating properly."
