The log cabin, believed to have been built sometime between 1834 and 1840, is an integral part in the expansion and the changes at the museum, says Bill Eull, treasurer of the museum board and chairman of the Spirit of 1834 fundraising committee. "The moving of the Rodman Cabin is important to the museum. The cabin will be renovated and it will be added to a streetscape that we will be making," he said at the cabin's present site last Tuesday (June 17). "It has taken time to develop the streetscape but in the end it will link the church with the rest of the campus, allowing visitors to view differ- ent periods of time with each different building as they walk along," he said. He said the cost of moving and reno- vating the cabin will be about $50,000. The committee hopes to.raise the money during the Spirit of 1834 fundraising campaign; and they'll be relying on the community to help raise the funds. "We have got wd of events planned so that people can get a feeling for the museum and realize what an important piece the cabin is," said Mr. Eull. He hopes the museum's fundraising goal will be reached by the end of 1997. The cabin was donated to the local museum more than three years ago by descendants of the Rodman clan, among the first settlers on Scugog Island. The interior has been gutted by volunteers to prepare for the move. 'We've had our volunteers in here angle, looking like it's about to topple over into a pond, which is also a concern for the officials. Over the building's 160 years of exis- tence it has had many uses, says Mr. Eull. "This cabin started off as a log cabin for a family and over the years has been a pig barn, tool shed, a guest shed and even a pump house. "This little building has been through so much; it has history written on the cabin itself." When the cabin is settled on its new property, it will be one of the museum's most important pieces. When complete, the cabin will show visitors how the set- tlers lived and worked. "We will try to have it set up inside to display the lifestyles of the oldest set- tlers and natives. It's going to be a "ren- old-vation'," said the treasurer, adding that even when the building is moved there will be plenty of investigating left to do. After the move the cabin will be sta- bilized, he said. The roof needs some fixing, and that the building should be secured. "As soon as the money comes in we will spend it. This is a long-term project but it will get done," Mr. Eull said, adding that officials agree that next summer is an reasonable goal.
