Tories pushing 30 bills through Queen's Park MPP's summer is cut short by busy agenda By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Don't look for Durham East MPP John O'Toole to be lazing on the beach this summer. That's because he'll be joining his col- leagues at Queen's Park, as MPPs sit through an unprecedented summer ses- sion, ordered by Premier Mike Harris to clear up a busy legislative agenda. The government will attempt to push through more than 30 bills before Jan. 1, 1998. Traditionally, Ontario's MPPs take a long break from Queen's Park during the warm summer months, concentrat- ing on constituency work. "This summer's going to be a short one. There's lots of legislation that needs to be completed by the end of this year and we're going to make sure that it gets done," said Mr. O'Toole. The Tory MPP said MPPs will be sit- ting in the legislature longer each day as well. They usually sit from 1:30 p.m. until around 6 p.m., but this summer they could be at it until midnight. That's to allow more debate time and move more pieces of legislation, said Mr. O'Toole. MPPs will sit from the early after- noon until Thursday (June 26), when they will reconvene on August 18 for another session. The members will make the trip back to Toronto on July 14 to hear what dates will be set for leg- .. 1slation. While Ontario's rep- resentatives will not sit in the House throughout the month of July, the local MPP said public hearings will be held through- out the province from . July 21 until Aug. 18. Mr. O'Toole said the revised schedule is indicative of a new way of doing business at Queen's Park. "There are a lot of things that need to be done and we're going to make the changes... We are not your typical gov- ernment, we are going to do everything we said we would do," he said. "This is sort of like going to be sum- mer school for us; we're just like every- one else who works in this province, we're only entitled to a couple of weeks of holiday time in the summer." Mr. O"Toole's constituency office will be closed July 28 to August 11.
