"It's too dangerous to try and get down there, so we have to wait." While he wouldn't spec- ulate on the cause of the blaze, Mr. Harrison did say that considerable dam- age had been done to the two-storey structure. "It was totally engulfed in flames when we got there so there is a lot of damage; the fire had a good head start on us. "We've now heard that there is close to a half-mil- lion dollars in damage, including, [I think, $150,000 worth of pigs," he said, stating that a Fire Marshal would not be vis- iting the scene. "There'll be no Fire Marshal because there is nothing they could find. It'll take days to clean this place up and from there it's doubtful he'll find some- thing. I'd guess that only an insurance adjuster will be out to poke around," said the deputy fire chief. Attempts were made to rescue some of the pigs, but, unfortunately, many were lost and more may have to be destroyed. "The property owners were moving some of the animals out and when we arrived, some of the fire- men helped them; I think we moved between 200 and 300 pigs for them," said Mr. Harrison. g barn tems available to them, local firefighters also had to use area resources to: extinguish the blaze. An inground pool on the prop- erty was drained, refilled and drained again. Tanker trucks made repeated trips to get water from Lake Scugog. "We must have pulled close to 80,000 gallons of water from the lake to put out the fire," said the deputy-chief. When the initial call o-- L PORT PERRY STAR CROSSWORD 1 1 15 PP I 59. Artifice 31.
