"At the present time we're reasonably staffed, but we're maybe one doc- tor short," he said. "We are not seriously understaffed at the time; other places in North Durham are in more of a need for staff than we are," added Dr. Allin. "The sit- uation in Brock Township needs to be addressed in the upcoming months and year. Guy Kirvan, the new CEO for the recently amalgamated area hospi- tals, says that no one has approached him regarding a lack of staffing. "Usually when the physicians feel that anoth- er doctor or more staff is in Port would round out PORT PERRY DENTAL OFFICE needed they come to us, but so far we haven't heard from anyone," he said. There are 14 practicing physicians currently 'working here, Mr. Kirvan said. And he speculated that if need be, new blood could be attracted to the area. : "There are various - ways we would try to -attract new physicians to the area," said Mr. Kirvan when asked how the com- munity would go about adding a new doctor to the area. "We would utilize our younger physicians; get them to talk to their class- mates from school and use their connections. Running an ad in family physician magazines is also a possibility. Those are basically the way to do it, but physician-to- physician word-of-mouth '18 preferable." Getting young doctors and those recently gradu- ated to work in northern, understaffed communities was a major bone of con- tention in contract negoti- ELE ations between the doctors and the provincial gov- ernment late last year. Doctors rejected provin- cial plans to assign new ° medical school grads to areas where they were needed. | As for the upcoming Health Services Restructuring Commission's response for the Durham Region, Dr. Allin says he hopes that there will be no staff layoffs. "I can't really give a guess to what the HSRC will do but it would cer- tainly be tough if we were to lose staff. : "One of our biggest fears is to have babies delivered in Oshawa; it would be devastating for us. Uxbridge elected not to do it, but doctors and patients are keen on doing it here."
