Port Perry Star Scugog residents should find out in a couple of weeks if they will be voting for their own Board of Education trustee in the muni- cipal elections this coming November. A committee of the municipal clerks from Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby will decide if Scugog will retain a single trustee or share two trustees who will run at large in the' Townships of Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge. If the clerks decide on the former, a single trustee will rep- resent both Brock and Uxbridge on the board after the municipal elections. / Scugog's current trustee on the board, Bobbie Drew, called the decision that will be made by the three municipal clerks "the best of a bad situation." This redistribution of trustees has come about because the Ministry of Education has declared that the number of trus- . tees in Durham will be reduced from the present 20 to 11 for the up-coming term, which starts aft- er the November elections. Mrs. Drew said she would have preferred that Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge each retain a single trustee because of the large geographical area of the three northern municipalities. LI the Local Number of Scugog trustees next term resolved tainty that it would have been appealed by that town. A committee of trustees called Education Improvement Committee (LEIC) has recommended that Scugog retain its trustee, with one to represent Brock and Uxbridge. But the final decision will be up to the three municipal clerks because the Durham board itself was split on whether to accept the LEIC recommendation. Mrs. Drew said the problem could have been solved quite eas- ily if the ministry had allowed Durham 12 trustees instead of 11. With those numbers, Ajax would get two trustees and Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge would retain one each. According to Sandy Beaton, an official with the Kawartha Fisheries Association, Lake Scugog is pretty much the only lake in the area that has not been infested by the tiny mus- sels yet.
