More families relied on welfare during the same period, though, numbers from the province show. Locally, the number of General Welfare Assistance (GWA) cases in Scugog in June were 172, down from the 178 in May of this year. However, Family Benefit Assistance (FBA) cases in the town- ship did rise slightly -- by one -- with 125 cases last month. Durham's Social Services department was involved with 297 cases in June, down from the 302 they han- dled in May. Meanwhile, the province saw a decrease of 242 welfare claims last month, with the number of cases drop- ping to 6,337 from 6,579. More than 2,300 GWA cases have been terminated since the Tory government took power in June of 1995. Scugog Township was just one of many municipalities in the province that saw the number of FBA claims rise between May and June. There were 5,379 cases in Ontario in May and that number rose to 5,425 in the month of June. Community and Social Services Minister Janet Ecker said the decrease in welfare cases was due to the number of summer jobs available, and the Harris government's new welfare initiatives. "This latest decline reflects an increase in seasonal employment. Our welfare reforms are also continuing to make a difference," she said in an announcement. fh, I 95, OTe ME).
