Imported beetle putting a bite on loosestrife blight By Jeff Mitchell Special to the Star You may not be aware of it, but a tiny bug from another continent is currently putting the bite on a wetland blight here in Scugog. : Local naturalist Cathy Galberg, an instructor at the Durham Board of recently-launched program that has seen the introduction of beetles to battle the purple loosestrife infestation here. She and three local students have released almost 3,000 Galerucella beetles in two wetland locations in Scugog. The bugs from Europe feast solely on loosestrife. "Their recent announcement was mostly a refining of what they told us in the March announcement, and it is fur- ther evidence that they are recognizing the need for more services in the 905-GTA area. It appears that they are put- ting the services where the population is growing."
