Easter Seals fundraiser has brought in almost $30,000 | ~ Rotary's Aquarama set to make waves for fifth year By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Port Perry's Rotary Club is getting set' to make a splash with its annual Aquarama fundraiser, which takes to the waters here Aug. 17. 'The event, now in its fifth year, has raised almost $30,000 for the Easter Seals fund for disabled children. And Aquarama -- the afternoon sees teams of four jet ski riders take to a course off Palmer Park to race against the clock and each other -- grows in popu- larity each summer, with teams from past years coming back and new folks joining, said Heather Haliburton-Smith, the Rotary Club chair of the event. "We've got 11 teams registered so far," she said last week: "Last year we had 10. "Each year we seem to go up two teams, and about $2,000." Profits from the event have risen steadily since its inception five years ago. Last year Aquarama raised more than $7,000, making its total four four years in excess of $27,000. "This year we're hoping to hit $8,000," Mrs. Haliburton-Smith said. There's still plenty of time left to reg- ister to take part in the event, whether .as a team of four or as an individual. Entrants are encouraged to register soon, and give themselves plenty of time to gather pledges prior to the event. "If you can't raise a whole team, we're always looking for individual riders, too, said Mrs. Haliburton-Smith.. "Individual riders will be combined in. teams the day of the event. : There will be prizes awarded in cate- gories such as the fastest individual and team rides; the most unusual rides (read: thrills and spills), and recognition for high pledge amounts for teams and indi- viduals. Begun by Port's Rotary Club, Aquarama has grown into something of a community event, with numerous local businesses and organizations contributing sponsorship or labor. Among those con- tributing to this year's event are: Komputer Klinic; Port Perry IGA; Jayson Callan Music; Antrim House Pub; Central Seven Association for Community Living; the Rotary Club of Uxbridge, and the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. A parituclarly stalwart supporter of the event is the Port Perry Marina, which has supplied equipment and staffing for the event for years. An added attraction this year will be media representation on the water. The Port Perry Star's own Chris Hall will do his best to make us proud, while the New VR in Barrie sends two members of its Labatt's Summer Road Crew. In addition, the KX 96 radio station's mobile unit will be on location to make people aware of the event. : Following the day's competition there will be a complimentary barbecue and corn roast for participants. Organizers hope that in addition to plenty of riders, they can attract a good crowd of spectators for the day's fun, as well. The success of the event -- and its ongoing popularity among competitors -- has been noticed by folks who are looking to make money for other causes as well, said Mrs. Haliburton-Smith. "I get calls from other community fundraising organizations asking ques- tions about it," she said.
