) / "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" i RISEN VRE A NS PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 19, 1997 - 13 Kids take to the mayor's pool instead Water quality problems close down Birdseye Pool Water quality problems at Birdseye Pool have forced the closure of the township's only public swimming pool. The Water St. swim- ming hole was closed to 'the public last Wednesday . after a mysterious prob- lem in the water was dis- covered, says Mayor Howard Hall. "They found some prob- lems with the pool; some- thing to do with the paint. Something was seeping through the paint and into the pool. "To be on the safe side and now swimming lessons are being held at my house. We'd rather see the kids complete their classes then have them chopped off," he said over the weekend. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and are expected to wrap up soon. They kicked off at Mayor Hall's Queen St. residence last Thursday. Attempts have been made to clean up the prob- lem and find a solution, says the Mayor. "We don't quite know what is seeping into the through the paint and it's making the water sort of milky. We tried putting chlorine into the water but it would only clear up for a day and then come back," he'said. Township officials have checked with other municipalities which operate public pools, but no answers have been found. If no solution can be found, Mayor Hall says that the public pool could be closed for the rest of the 1997 season. The pool usually closes down the first Monday in we have closed the pool pool. It's coming in September. CHRIS HALL/PORT PERRY STAR Children enlisted in the township's swimming programs were moved from Birdseye Pool to Mayor Howard Hall's pool last week after staff discovered a problem with water. Mayor Hall says that something is seeping its way through the paint at the Water St. swimming hole and into the pool, turning the water "milky". Attempts to treat the problem with chlorine have failed and the mayor says the pool may be closed the rest of the summer.
