Ee ---- _----_.__... le, thlI--E---- ' SPORTS MoJacks issue Storm warning Guelph Storm and Oshawa Generals tangle in Port next month in a pre-season match 'By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Some of the future stars of the National Hockey League will be coming to Port Perry on September 13. Hockey fans of all ages will have a wonderful chance to see these young stars "up close" when the Guelpkhi Storm and Oshawa Generals tangle in an OHL exhibitioh game at the Scugog Arena. Game time is 2:00 p.m., and a very familiar face will be back again with | the return of George Burnett as head coach of the Storm. Burnett is Port Perry's best known hockey export, and it was through his efforts and those of Murray Parliament, general manager of the Junior C ModJacks, that this exhibition match is possible. In fact, net proceeds from the September 13 tilt between Oshawa and Guelph will go to support the Junior C ModJacks and Port Perry Minor Hockey. : It promises to be an exciting game as both the Storm and Generals will be nearing the end of their pre-season training, and lots of players on both teams will be "going all out" in the hopes of catching a spot on the roster. "IT expect it will be a very competitive game, the players working very hard," Burnett told the Star in an interview last week. : It will be the last of five pre-season games for the Storm before they open the regular OHL schedule the following Thursday night. Some of the players on the Storm fans should watch for include highly ranked defenseman Chris Hajt (son of former NHLer Bill Hajt) who is now attending the US Junior team camp and is a draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers. Goaltender Chris Madden will be at the Leaf training camp this fall but very well could be in the lineup September 13 against the Generals, along with forwards Andrew Long (Florida Panthers draft pick) and Brian Wilson, drafted by the Colorado Avalanche. : Turn to Page 22 Ontario loses twice to B.C. in final Port's Angels help Ontario capture silver at '97 Games The Port Perry Angels Midget Girls Softball Club was well represented at the 1997 Canada Summer Games in Brandon, Manitoba. Coaches Rick Finlay and Robin Sluce were team 'coaches as well as catcher Kristy Zamora and Centerfielder Sara Cain. The team was made up of players from across Ontario and was selected after a number of tryout camps and. the final selection made this year. Ontario won their team pool with wins over P.E.I. 6-0; B.C. 1-0; Alberta 7-2 and Nova Scotia 7-0. In the double knockout Ontario came back and defeated Saskatchewan 4-2 and then faced B.C. with the winner advancing to the Gold Medal game. Ontario worked hard for a 3-0 win. On Friday B.C. defeated Manitoba to face Ontario and needed to win twice. The rain came down hard and officials said the games must be played. B.C. won 11-1 in the first game and 3- 1 in the final to win gold and Ontario the silver. : The girls fought hard and Ontario should be proud of their effort and hard work.
