In all, 50 riders signed up to form 10 teams for the annual charity event, which raises money for Easter Seals and other local children's charities. Closing in on the $30,000 mark, Aquarama raised close to $8,000 this year and was quite successful, says the Port Perry Rotary Club chair of the event, Heather Haliburton-Smith. "Everyone who participated had quite a wonderful time and I'm confident that we have reached our goal of $8,000 for 1997. Right now the total amount pledged is $7,826.21 and we still have other sponsors coming in," said Mrs. Haliburton-Smith Monday morning. Over the past four years just over $20,000 has been collected, and the money raised from Sunday's event will put the grand total around $98,000, she estimates. : Bryan Pawlin shattered the previous highest individual pledge mark of $864 -- set in 1996 -- when he raised $1,042.88 for the charity event. "That's very amazing. It's the highest that's ever been raised by one person," said Mrs. Haliburton-Smith. One other record that fell this year | NEW FOR BACK TO SCHOOL | was the fastest individual time around the course, when Matt Youmans edged last year's record-setting time of 1:09.22 with his own blistering pace of 1:08.77. The Scugog Seals were officially awarded the fastest team title after they ripped around the triangular course in quick fashion. Members of the team included Sheri Smith, Travis Merrick, Matt Youmans, Brad Wilson and Matt Brown. Rounding out the top five fundraisers, behind Bryan Pawlin, were Yvonne Spofford, $837; Niko Herold, $634.50; Bob Smith, $444; and Leo Steffler col- lected $430 for the event. The highest total team pledge was submitted by Devon's Daredevils, who collected over $1,600. Overall, Mrs. Haliburton-Smith says that she's pleased with the way the gom- munity rallied in support of the charity event and with the spirit showed by the participants. "We had lots of support from everyone; there was lots of community spirit and the businesses were great. They showed a lot of support for the kids. All the nioney raised is going to the Easter Seals and to other local children's chari- ties, and I think it's important that peo- ple know that all the money raised - locally is going to local children and pro- jects." The event saw contestants race the clock around a course on jet skis. BR .
