10- PORY PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 16, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Jobs, national unity on a By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Fresh from a lengthy summer recess, Durham MP Alex Shepherd and his Liberal colleagues are heading back to Ottawa for their second term in office. Mr. Shepherd, who's entering his second term as MP, predicted the government will stay the course on its economic strategy, and wrestle with the ongo- ing national unity ques- tion. "Realistically, we are going to go with the same economic agenda," he said, warning that gains made during the Grits' {irst term in office shouldn't lead to a loos- ening of the purse strings. "Lots of people want to move on because they think we are doing okay now, but the country's debt and deficit is still around $610 billion. We want to continue on the road of fiscal responsi- bility we started out on " RAR RAR RAR RR RRR LRRARRRRY ARR RAR RR LR ALR ARR RRR ALR RRR RRR RNY ARBRRRARBRRRTYSS Starting from $112.00 * Shrink wrapped & outside storage * We can accommodate boats up to 30 ft. * Factory trained mechanics will winterize your boat Great Rates On Winter Storage * Preventative FA SvsrEMarcHED LAL EL 28 £8 Lf £00 LA U Joint 95 'Mercruiser, a con® [ plus owe Fonts) * Discount for boats on trallers * Hull cleaning from $2.85/ft. ) * Battery maintenance & storage * Shrink wrapping from $10.95/ft Port Perry Marina (905) 985-4595 Catt att ted tatat dott lt delat dd Ad A dL AR Ld 2 RL 22 222 22 PPT TTT TTT TTR END OF SEASON Dr 1a" STEAN DAIVES & INSOARDS [JET CTTCC CLLR - *Excludes Gearcase Oil Fuel Conditioner * Rust Inhibitors * Antifreeze | * Hydrographic Charts « Batteries | 0 < 0 lo Showroom Accessory Sale 50% j off paddles, Life jackets, off | | coupon Fenders, etc. coupon | | (IN STOCK ITEMS) I ] L B CED ED CED SED EDD TD A GED SNE) SU) SUIT I) SIND SIE SEED SND SINS) GUUG) SOND EEE) RED Em Notice Alex Shepherd in our first term." The Durham MP also says that throne speech plans are being dis- cussed for when the gov- ernment returns to office on Sept. 22. " We're going to have to look at (Quebec Slla lm ®V Nd Ethel Robertson Premier) Lucien Bouchard and his pos- turing in Quebec. We have to get our act together because we want Canada to be more of a reflection of a nation, of a country. "We don't want to look like a country sep- arated, going in differ- ent directions. We have to evolve." Mr. Shepherd said the government also said accountability and participatory govern- ment should be themes for the next mandate. " People from the country should be mak- ing these important decisions, not just peo- ple in a tower in Ottawa," he said. " We're making this a better country to live THOMAS September 21st Love & best wishes from your family HAPPY SWEET 16TH Ceri Love mom, dad, Laura, Best wishes to in. We're going to have a great opportunity in the next two years -- a new millennium -- for a national renewal; to decide where this coun- try and its people are going. We have to con- centrate on not what divides us, but what defines us in the world." And as always, the question of whether or not to cut taxes is on the minds of MPs. No one wants to see a tax increase and the government wants to try and reduce income tax, but not at the expense of health care and social programs, he said. "The people in Scugog Township told me dur- ing the spring election that they didn't want to genda for Durham's MP lose their health care programs or social ser- vices." At home in Durham, Mr. Shepherd says that he wants to push for- ward with promoting technology and youth employment. For years Durham Region has been driven by the auto industry but that's changing, he said; employers -- and future employees -- must embrace new technology and new science for jobs for the future. "Employers come to me and say they can't find anybody skilled to work for them and that's a shame because we have significant youth unemployment and that's wrong." > / / ORDER-PARKS / INSURANCE BROKERS INC.
