Em... .. "no "A Family rradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 15, 1997 - 19 Seagrave saddened b By Anne Sandiford Sincere sympathy from the community is expressed to the Hurst family this week. Sadly, Don Hurst, son of Mable Hurst, passed away on Friday. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wagg Funeral Home. Don fought a valiant bat- tle against cancer for the past few years. Don had witnessed the agony of can- cer years ago when his wife, Blanche passed away from cancer. I'm sure many long time residents will remem- ber their vegetable stand at Honey's Corners where they sold not only vegetables but every kind of Blanche's home made pickle you could think of. He was an avid sports enthusiast. He was most notedly involved with Port Perry Minor Hockey for many years, Junior Farmers hockey, and base- ball. He was one of the founding members of the Scugog Angels Women's Fastball team and was involved in baseball for many years and played intermediate ball himself. Don retired from General Motors after 30 years of ser- vice and during his retire- ment was always counted on by many of us to help with neighborhood projects. Along with his companion Morag he enjoyed his golden years with his friends and family in Port Perry and Morag's family in Dunnville, where Don passed away. To his sons, Aaron, Bill, and Brad, to Morag, and espe- cially to his mom, Mable...our thoughts are with you at this time. Seagrave Mariposa Ladies Group meets Oct. 21 at 7:45 p.m. The guest speaker will be Janet Linthwaite from the Uxbridge Natural Healing Centre. Members are reminded to take their own mugs and Loonie. (This meeting is at the home of Jill Coffey). Cubs and Beavers enjoyed a successful Apple Day Saturday. Thanks to Greenbank, Seagrave and Robinglade residents for their generosity. A speedy return to good health is wished for Joan Butler who is in Port Perry Hospital. Congratulations to Ellesworth and Luella Kennedy who celebrated their 53rd wedding anniver- sary on Tuesday of this week. On a beautiful and color- ful Sunday morning Rev. Ross Carson conducted a special Thanksgiving ser- vice. The chancel was deco- rated with an abundance of vegetables, fruit and flow- ers. Donna Sweetman read the scripture from Matthew 6: 25-33 from which Rev. Carson's sermon was based. During assembly time Rev. Carson, with help from Bill Barr, had the congregation give things for which we can be thankful, and things to share with others. Margaret Ingram gave the Presbytery Report from the meeting which was held on Sept. 17 at Trinity United Church in Cannington. Rt. Rev. Bill Phipps was named as our new Moderator at the 36th General Council which was held at Camrose, Alberta in August. There was a coffee hour following the service. There will be no church or Sunday School at Seagrave next Sunday, Oct. 19 to allow our congregation to attend Pinedale Anniversary Service at 11 a.m. A variety program is being presented at Seagrave Church this Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. to raise funds for the new furnace. The ladies are asking for dona- tions to be wrapped for sale and brought as early as pos- sible that evening.
