RRL = oR WA ve ST SP SR | PAPER hha 8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 21 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Demmers will challenge incumbent for trustee's seat A Scugog Island man says he has four good reasons for running for the position of Scugog's public school trustee. Martin Demmers said that after plenty of encouragement, and thinking of his childrens' futures, he opted to run. "Several of my friends encouraged me to run for the position; it wasn't - anything I had planned for awhile. They thought I could make a difference in the school system," he said. "At the same time I have four very good reasons to run for the trustee's position: I have two children at Port Perry High School, and two in elementary school. You could say I have a vested inter- est." In order to make the school system bet- ter, you've got to start at home, said Mr. Demmers. "You have to begin with your own kids and make sure they get a good education. This then trans- fers on to all students, and I believe every person can make a contribution to society and in the end, everyone Demmers gets a good education." While Mr. Demmers says he has no specific agenda, he adds that he would like to see safer, drug-free schools for his children. A resident of Scugog Township for 14 years, he has no previous political experience, but believes he can make a contribution with the Durham board. He is a self-employed professional engineer and now operates an organic farm. He serves on the School Community Councils at both S.A. Cawker and PPHS, and has been involved with the School Advisory Committees and councils at R.H. Cornish, Cawker and the local high school for 14 years. He has also been the Past President of the Cornish School Advisory Committee. "I think as a professional I can make good decisions and have input into important things," he said. Mr. Demmers, a Hood Dr. resident, has been married to his wife Tina for 19 years and has volunteered as an assistant coach for the high school's swim team for three years and is involved in the Information Resource Centre expansion at the local secondary school. He's challenging incumbent Bobbie Drew in the Nov. 10 election.
