"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 4, 1997 - 5 Residents worried about ¢ Impact of golf course By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Residents of the Concession Two area of Scugog are still concerned about possible negative Impacts on their homes from a proposed nine hole golf course. "Those concerns were aired at a public meeting Monday afternoon and cen- tre around the effect on the wells, increased traffic on Scugog Line 2 and the use of pesticides and her- bicides on the course to be named Golfer's Dream, a par 36 of just over 3,200 yards in length. It is proposed for land owned by Please Save and Recycle of Whitby, at 1000 Scugog Line 2 in Ward 1. Council was told the golf course owner will pay a professional hydrogeology company to conduct a well monitoring program, and if irrigation on the course proves detrimental to household wells within 500 metres, the golf course will pay to have them corrected. But residents said this agreement leans too much in favor of the golf course owner; they worry that if there ic problem with their wells, they could be without water for 10 days or longer before corrective action is taken. And a resident who operates a dairy farm on the opposite side of Line 2 said the golf course could impact on water capabili- ties should the farming operation increase some time in the future. Ward 1 Councillor Doug Moffatt pointed out that the new Scugog Official Plain (not yet formally approved) spells out that golf courses in the town- ship must irrigate from surface water only, not wells. Kevin Holmes, a con- sultant working for the course developer said steps will be taken to reduce the amount of water needed for irrigation -- cutting down the amount of fair- way on each hole, for exam- ple -- but because the site 1s a former gravel pit, sur- face water drains into the ground too quickly to be collected for course irriga- tion purposes, making it necessary to supply water from a deep well of nearly 300 feet. Council made no deci- sion on the application Monday afternoon. In fact, Mayor Howard Hall said that with the number of technical problems still to be resolved, a decision should not be expected until well into the new year. Thieves strike home on Hwy. 7A Police say that thieves used a propane tank to break into a Hwy. 7A home sometime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m on Oct. 27. Police say that after an unsuccessful attempt to open a sliding glass door at the rear of the home with a propane tank, a thief smashed a dining room window to gain entry into the home. Inside drawers were rummaged through and a VCR was removed from a nearby television set, but not taken. The thieves moved on to upstairs bed- rooms where they found a large quantity of jewelry, say police.
