CSR WARNE "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 2, 1997 - 9 Teacher looks back on rewarding years In local classrooms By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star What was supposed to be a short foray in the teaching profession became a career that spanned three decades for a local woman. A retirement tea is being held for Pauline Pavlik, the Academic Resource teacher at Prince Albert Publi¢ School, on December 19 from 4 - 5:30 p.m. Having lived almost all of her life in Port Perry, Mrs. Pavlik attended school at R. H. Cornish P.S. and Port Perry High School. She says her Grades 4, 5 and 6 teacher, Mrs. McFarlane, was the one who planted the seed as to what her career would be: "She was a wonderful teacher." Since graduating from teacher's college in 1963, Mrs. Pavlik has enjoyed a variety of roles in the edu- cation system. Her first teaching position was held for four years at Dr. C. F. Cannon Public School in Oshawa. After marrying Charlie Pavlik in 1965, her goal was to teach long enough to obtain her permanent teacher's certificate, "then I would quit to have a fam- ily." But things didn't go quite according to plan. Those four years increased to 34 wonderful years with- in the education system. In 1967 Mrs. Pavlik started teaching Grade 1 at R. H. Cornish, and stayed there until 1983. "When you see kids that can't read when they ini- tially come to school in September, but are proudly reading at the end of June, that's a big thrill," she said. "These kids accomplished something, and I'm glad I was a part of it ." From 1983 until 1987, Mrs. Pavlik enjoyed work- WARNING If you have not seriously looked ing as the academic resource teacher at Cornish, where she tested and programmed children with special needs. From 1987 to 1989 she advanced to being the program resource teacher for Area One at Sinclair Public School in Whitby. This new role entailed travelling to all public and high schools within the area. In 1989 Mrs. Pavlik became the academic resource teacher at Prince Albert, a role she will con- tinue to enjoy up until her last day of school on Dec.19. It appears her daughter, Catherine Mitchell, will be following in her moth- er's footsteps. Catherine hopes to attend teacher's college after she finishes the fourth year of her Honors BA in French at York University. Now is the time to retire, Mrs. Pavlik said. Her hus- band Charlie retired two years ago, and enjoys his new life style. "We're both healthy and want to share our time together," she said. Mrs. Pavlik says she's really been fortunate to have worked with so many colleagues who have been willing to share ideas and knowledge with her. Having worked with numerous administrators in the education field and four superintendents, she says Superintendent Bob Martin was the most car- ing person she's had the privilege of knowing. In a career that has spanned over three decades, Mrs. Pavlik has worked under eight differ- ent principals. A retirement tea is being held Dec. 10 in the school library from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Former pupils, past and present col- leagues and friends are all invited to attend.
