22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 2, 1997 : "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" i... tl SPORTS Local squad fares well at Ops tourney DQ Atoms cream opponents After coming up short in some close games to start the season, the Diary Queen Atoms came on like a blizzard. Their streak began on Nov. 7 in Cobourg. After a scoreless first period, Tyson Savage opened with a quick goal for Port Perry from Owen Penstone. Moments later Craig Keho scored unassisted. Cobourg was awarded a penalty shot that goalie Leo Taillon turned away. Chris Charron then scored with one second left in the second peri- od from Tyson Savage and Taylor Churchill. Jake Jones made it 4- 0 after scoring off a nice pass from Craig Kehoe. Cobourg spoiled the shut out, but Port Perry left with a 4-1 victory. The next morning the Dairy Queen crew competed in the Ops tournament. Patrick Dunn start- ed in net and turned away all Wilberforce chances. Tyson Savage broke in all alone and scored on a hard shot. In the clos- ing minute of the first period, Tyson scored off of Chris 'Charron's and Owen Penstone's rebound as they swarmed the net. Owen's strong effort enabled him to bang in another goal with assists going to Trevor Doe and Chris Charron. Wilberforce man- aged only one goal, due to the strong defensive play led by Michael Redman, as Port Perry went on to win this match and earn some points. The strong Ops team was Port's next opposition but, Port Perry was ready for the challenge. The end-to-end battle saw a scoreless first period. Ops capitalized on the power play with a goal in the dying moments of the second peri- od. Leo Taillon, who was playing strong in net, kicked out the puck to Tyson Savage. Tyson fed Owen Penstone the puck for a break- away. Owen deked the goalie out of his shorts and slipped the puck into the open net to tie the game. Ops tried to come back but Scott Martin and Kristy Ashton's strong defensive skills helped turn them away. The Dairy Queen crew came away with a well- earned draw. Port's final match of the round- robin was against the Oshawa Blackhawks. Port Perry came out flying as Tyson Savage batted in Owen Penstone's rebound. Jake Jones picked up a loose puck in the corner and ripped it by the goalie with an assist to Craig Simmons. Port made it 3-0 when Glen Powell knocked in Craig Kehoe's and Jake Pilkey's rebound. Oshawa scored part way through the second and then Jake Jones replied with his second goal of the game from Glen Powell. Port Perry earned the same record as Ops, but greatly outscored their other opponents to be awarded the championship. Taylor Churchill was named Port's M.V.P. The coaching staff's hard work paid off and were satisfied with this fine result. Special thanks to Ken and Ryan Fraser for sharpening the goalies' skills. Port Perry returned home for league play against Omemee on Nov. 13. In the opening minute of the game Brett Simmons banged in a pass from his brother Craig to start off the scoring for Dairy Queen. A minute later, Jake Jones' persistent fore-checking dug the puck out to Glen Powell who knocked it home. Port's third goal came from Cassidy Weber with assists to Craig Simmons and Taylor Churchill.
