"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" ModJacks embarrassed at home PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 2, 1997 - 23 New Novice team picks up two wins From Page 21 it looked like the strategy just might wo, k. Darryl Sennachal slapped home a backhand from in front of the Chiefy' net to make the score 5-3 and give the MoJacks another life. But fifteen seconds later it was snuffed out when Chiefs captain Ben Chabot scored on the first shot on Betts. Smelling blood, the visitors turned up the heat in the final ten minutes and really made a disheartened ModJack squad look bad as they fired five more behind Betts who was get- ting virtually no help from the other five guys on the ice in green and white sweaters, "Lakefield has a very good club; a lot of skilled players. You have to check them hard and we just didn't do that," said coach Menzies. "It was Just a poor effort all around." The shoe was on the other foot Saturday night in Lakefield where the MoJacks were sparked by a fine netminding performance by Mackie. The Chiefs opened the scoring, but it was all MoJacks from then on as they took a 3-1 lead after 20 min- utes and upped things to 5-1 by the end of the middle stanza. They enjoyed a 6-1 lead at one point in the final period before the Chiefs got a couple late in the game to make the final 6-3. For the MoJacks, Ryan Odette had a hat trick, Adam Bonneveld a pair, and Brent Lazary chipped in with a single. Coach Menzies was understand- ably very pleased with the victory and the way the team performed in Lakefield. Last time they paid a visit there, Chiefs walked all over them to the tune of 13-2. SLAPSHOTS: Speaking of home- and-home series, the MoJacks jump right back into the fire this coming weekend as they travel to Uxbridge Friday night (faceoff at 7:30) and then host the Bruins at the Scugog Arena Sunday night for a 7 p.m. start. In three meetings so far this sea- son, the MoJacks have a slight edge. Both teams have 8-3 wins to their credit while the MoJacks enjoyed a 9-8 overtime win the last time they were in Uxbridge on Nov. 8. This is one of the clubs the MoJacks are chasing in their bid to catch a playoff berth, so this weekend series is critical for both teams. After 21 games, the MoJacks have 14 points on six wins, one tie and one point for an overtime loss. The team is at the halfway point in the schedule, and time is starting to slip away. Between now and the end of 1997, MoJacks have eight games (four at home, four on the road) and they badly need to put together a winning streak if they want to be around when the puck drops for the Central League playoffs in early February. The first game was at Port Perry Saturday afternoon against Oshawa's Little N.H.L. Bruins. Port started off quick when, at 24 sec- onds into the first, Alex Grnovski scored, assist- ed by our big defence- man, Cody Steranka. Oshawa fought back with two goals of their own in the first period to lead the game. Adam Maahs scored two goals in the second period for Port, with an assist by Ryan Samis. Oshawa scored one goal to tie the game before Ray Petch bulldogged his way into both Oshawa defencemen and the puck found its way into the net. Oshawa came out quick in the third period with a goal, then Bret Pope scored from Ryan Samis to put Port ahead for good. Adam Maahs scored into an empty net to complete his hat trick. Port's second game was at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium: Sunday night against a gritty Little N.H.L. Blackhawks team. Port Perry scored four goals before Oshawa woke up and scored a couple of their own. At the end of the game Port Perry came through with a 5- 3 win over the Blackhawks. Goals were scored by Patrick Madder with two, Alex Grnovski with two and Brett Pope scoring one. Both goalies, Kris Barchuk and Frazier Gibson, played solid over the weekend and Hugh Allward checked tenaciously in both weekend games.
