Kim Fernandes present- ed each of the 10 students with two copies of her newest book -- Christmas Crafts -- at a special cere- mony at R. H. Cornish recently. . In May 1996, the stu- dents gathered at the local school for two days to create the crafts illustrated in the book. "We wanted to test the book with some local stu- dents to see if the pictures were sufficient and if the instructions were readable, so that they could follow them easily," she explained. "We wanted to see if chil- dren could actually make the crafts I put in the book." "It was really neat watching them work. We brought tonnes of clay and supplies and they just went right at it," she said. "I walked around and answered questions, but they worked really hard. The first day they created their pieces and the second day they spent painting and decorating them." The students selected were between Grades 1 and 8, and were picked for their interest in art, said Ms Fernandes. Born in Long Island, New York, Ms Fernandes moved to Toronto with her parents when she was four and has since made her way to Scugog Township, where she now lives with her two- year-old daughter. A graduate of Toronto's Ontario College of Art and Design, she describes her- self as a full-time author/illustrator who got her knack for art from her parents. "I feel more comfortable with clay; I feel better. With drawing I keep erasing and erasing; I'm a perfectionist. I get my satisfaction from working with clay," she said.
