. 10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 9, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Port posties have a truck load of mail to deliver Strike end has post office playing catch-up By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Local postal workers will find themselves with large lots to carry thas week, after the return to work by thousands of striking Canada Post employees. Bob Walker, the Postmaster at Port Perry's post office, said that local employees will resume their usual rou- tines as mail will once again start flowing throughout the country. "Everything is flowing normally right now," he saird from his office Friday. "We got a big load of regular mail in today and the pick-ups will be pretty heavy on Monday." More than 45,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) walked off the job 1n late November. They were legislated back to work by the federal government on Dec. 4. During the strike the local employees -- eight office workers and 13 route drivers -- continued to sort and deliver mail in Scugog Township. But only items mailed in the township to Scugog addresses could be deliv- ered. With CUPW employees back on the job, Mr. Walker says things will be moving at a hectic pace. "We were open during the strike but we have got a lot to sort and deliv- er now that they're back to work," he said, explain- ing that a "very large truck" had recently rolled in from the Gateway Plant, a distribution cen- tre in Toronto that sorts and sends mail to the township. Unhappy with the Liberal government's actions, CUPW workers have hinted they may dis- rupt corporate mail, and fail to check for proper postage on all parcels. But Mr. Walker said the local office will con- tinue to process mail nor- mally. He said anything that arrives with insufficient postage will be shipped back to its origin. "Supposedly, if they miss any package without postage marked to come here, it could arrive, but, technically, if there's no postage we'll return it to the sender," he said. However, "I don't think they'll adhere to that because they're conscien- tious and they will follow regulations," he said, adding that anyone try- ing to send mail locally without proper postage will also have it returned.
