(Former Ward 5 councillor) Karen Puckrin and Marilyn Pearce (former Regional Councillor) did not run again, and we have a new Regional Councillor (Ken Gadsden) and a new Ward 4 councillor (David Dietlein)," said Mayor Moffatt. "There's a lot of back- ground for these people to cover so they are going to be busy reading manuals and going over procedures." Scugog Chamber of Commerce Christmas Open House Join us for lunch! The mayor also said that the council will meet at least once more before Christmas informally. "There's not a lot of work piled up for us right now, so why work for the sake of working? The entire council was to do a tour of the township yesterday (Dec. 8), to exam- ine road issues, sites of future development, and other matters. While Scugog Council has had only one formal meeting in December -- the swearing-in at Town Hall 1873 -- other area councils have a busy month planned. Besides meeting on Dec.1 for inaugural cere- monies, Uxbridge Township councillors will meet on Dec. 15 before the holidays. In the new year they plan on holding council on the first and third Monday of each month, and commit- tees will meet on the second and fourth Mondays. Moffatt Perhaps the busiest neighboring council is Brock, whose councillors will meet a total of four times in the month of December. Other than their first meeting on Dec. 1, they were scheduled to convene on Dec. 8, 15, and 22. In 1998 they will continue to meet on the first and third Monday while their com- mittees will also meet on the second and fourth Monday. Also jumping right to work is the Mariposa Council, where councillors got to work right after their swearing in. In their first major action, they appealed a planned subdivision in the Seagrave area, and called for the termination of a contract an inspector had with the township. Mr. Cuddie said new members will have to get accustomed to the way business is conducted in the municipality. "Since we have a few new people around the table we have to give them a chance to get ori- entated," said Mr. Cuddie last week. "We'll be doing a roads tour and there'll be special courses for new councillors. "Right now the work- load is low because the schedule slows down between councils," the administrator said. "If there are any decisions to be made we can do them informally but there are no major problems to deal with." He doesn't think the council's slow start -- they're not scheduled to meet until Jan. 12 -- will look bad to the public. "I'really don't think so; that's strictly a per- ception. This council is into working in a big way." As for the coming term, Mr. Cuddie said council- lors will have their hands full. Leading the way will challenges presented by downloading of services, taxation and other provincial initiatives, he said. "We will have to work on the planning issue of lot sizes and density and the major, major impacts of reassessment. Also the downloading, there will be no more provincial transfer payments. "We're going to have a shortfall and new ways of revenue will be need to be found. There is so much uncertainty lying ahead for us." 383 y.
