"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 16, 1997 - 9 It's music to their ears Annual citrus sale raises $4,000 for Port Perry High School's music program By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Port Perry High School's annual Citrus Sale has now come and gone, and music instructor Charles White wants to thank the community for its great support. While this year's effort did not match 1996 sales, the event was still a success, said Mr. White. "We had our usual good response from the public. Over three-quarters of our sales were to repeat cus- tomers so we have to thank our steady clientele," he said last Saturday afternoon, while overseeing local students carry orders out to waiting vehicles. The school's cut of the sales will be about $4,000, sald Mr. White. This year's sale saw about 10 tonnes of oranges and grapefruit sold in Scugog. "The sales we had this year were about average, but average is good. I'm not saying average is bad at all," he said. Proceeds from the fundraiser go toward the music department budget , to be used to shuttle local music students to area concerts and productions, as well as pay entry fees at competitions. In addition, an electric piano was purchased for the department last year, and Mr. White says he plans to buy a guitar amp if 'there are sufficient funds this year. "The majority of the students helped sell the citrus, and we always have volunteers lining up to help out," he said. "There is no problem getting these students to help; they are all highly motivated young people who do whatever is needed no matter'if it is an antique show, a citrus sale or a concert." Mr. White remains unsure as to whether or not the teacher's strike and the two-week interruption it caused had any adverse effects on the fundraiser. "If there was any effect, it was a minimal one," he said. "Two years ago we had the same sales, so it's hard to predict if there were any problems." Operation Citrus was spearheaded by students Trish Haertel and Joel Van Camp. Also having a hand in the event were music council members Margaret Knight and Joel vanVeghel. "I'm absolutely pleased with the results of the sale. The community always gives us tremendous support, no matter what the programs," said Mr. White. "Whatever the youth in Scugog Township does, the community is always there to back them."
