22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 16, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Sr STAR PORT PERRY JEFF MITCHELL / PORT PERRY STAR REACHING IN: The Port Perry Tweens Ringette team had its hands full over the past weekend when they played host to their annual tournament. The Pharmacy Tweens were unsuccessful in making it into the championship game after they lost three of their four matches. Here, a couple of players wrestle for the ring while a lone Port Perry attempts to - squad. MoJacks feelin' Festive Port celebrate Christmas early with an impressive 11-1 win over Colborne reach in a sneak away. Port lost this one 6-4 to a Pickering By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star It was roast turkey and plum pudding for the Port Perry MoJacks Sunday night as they feasted on the Colborne Black Hawks in Junior C action at the Scugog Arena. While MoJack fans enjoyed the club's annual Christmas Night (there were lots of lucky draws for kids and adults and a visit from that jolly old Elf himself) the players decided to celebrate the festive sea- son in a different way--by scoring goals, and lots of them. When the final ho-ho-ho drifted down from the rafters, the green and white had skated away with an 11-1 victory, just the second time this season the club has hit double figures in what is rapidly becoming - a feast or famine kind of year. 14 4 And the MoJacks were more than full measure for the lop-sided victory -- there certainly was nothing flukey about it at all. They completely out-played the visitors at both ends of the rink -- and all the space in between-- and got some timely stops from netmin- der Jeff Mackie when things were still close. They set the tempo early by tak- ing a 2-0 lead inside the three- minute mark and never looked back from there. High scoring Adam Bonneveld and newcomer Dale Drummond (more on him later) staked the ModJacks to that early lead. The only goal to elude Mackie in the MoJack cage came at the 5:45 mark of the first on a two-on-one break with P. J. Michaels finishing off the play with a shot from close range after a MoJack defender had sprawled in an effort to block the centering pass. But if the Black Hawks thought the MoJacks were in the Christmas spirit on that night, they were wrong. Drummond got his second of the game and then Seth Gray (who has been on a scoring tear lately) gave the team a comfortable 4-1 lead at the conclusion of 20 minutes. And the second period was pretty much a repeat of the first. Barry Forth, Bonneveld and Brent Lazary did the damage here. Forth's came off a very clever set up by Casey vanSchagen who fed him a great pass in the slot and Forth one-timed it behind a shell-shocked Korey Glover in the visitor's cage. In the third, Gray got his second of the game, followed by vanSchagen, then Rob Simms, and finally Derek Crossman who round- ed out the scoring at one short of a dozen. Needless to say, several MoJacks were able to fatten up their individ- ual scoring stats. Gray had five points, and vanSchagen and Bonneveld had three each. Jeff Mackie wasn't all that busy but made the stops when they count- ed. He's got a very quick glove hand and showed it off in the third period with back-to-back stabs, including one from the shallow slot that had goal written all over it. Head coach Brad Menzies said he didn't expect such a high-scoring game, but he was pleased to see his guys get the win to build more con- fidence and hopefully some badly needed momentum as the hunt for that final playoff berth (with Uxbridge, Georgina and Bobcaygeon continues) "We haven't had any trouble get- ting offense lately," said the coach. "It was nice to see the defense tonight." Menzies watched the contest from the confines of the press box as he was nicked for a two-game suspension for a verbal disagree- ment with the referee in Saturday night's tough 6-5 loss to the Little Britain Merchants. Karl Durham and Scott Pinkerton handled the chores behind the bench in his absence. Menzies was more than upset by a Port Perry penalty and then an infraction that was not called on the Merchants a short time later. The MoJacks were leading that game 5-4 with under two minutes to play when the Merchants got the Turn to Page 24 Port Despite good efforts our Port Perry Pharmacy Tweens ringette team were unsuccessful in making it into the cham- pionship game on Sunday, Dec. 14. Mark Lott played a strong and Balancer game in goal making many key saves dur- ing the Legionnaires romp.
