Vol. 132 Number 05 PORT PERRY, ONTARIO - TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1997 COPY 65¢ (61¢+ 4¢ GsT) 32 Pages Scugog flooded with | lottery scam tickets By Chris Hall . Port Perry Star Scugog residents are being warned about scratch and win tickets that are turning up in their mailboxes this Christmas season. While the bright yellow "Santa's Christmas Madness" cards promise big cash prizes and trips, the only thing that's guaranteed is a $20 charge to your phone bill when you try and claim your prize. A day after watching a warning about scratch and win tickets with a Christmas scene on Toronto's CFTO television sta- tion, Zolton Domik of Epsom was surprised -- and angered -- to find three delivered to his home in the mail. "I'm aware of their game; I watched CFTO and they did a story on the scam and I reviewed it and 1 understood it," he said. "I scratched my tickets and, whoa: I won $1,000 on each one. Now they want me to call a 1-900 number on the back of the card so I can register my win, but I've heard they will only keep me on the line to run up my (phone) bill and it all goes to them. You call the number and you are out $19.95," he said Thursday afternoon. Close to 400 spectators, nine local bands and international recording artist Loreena McKinnett made their way to the Scugog Community Centre Friday evening for a benefit concert for the 15-year-twins who lost their mother in a car accident "ast month. Throughout the five-hour show the audience cheered on their favor- ite rock, blues, punk and Celtic bands while organizers of the Mayhem Music Festival counted proceeds, which were handed over to the Nestleton twins. Stephanie Boddington, one of the organizers of the event, said the event clearly went over well. "Everything was just great. Everyone pulled together to make this a huge success; all the bands and all who helped made this a great night." Warren and Natalie Hogan were presented with close to $3,000 from the concert's ticket sales and left Sunday to enjoy a trip at Nassau in the Bahamas, courtesy of Brooklin's Marigold Travel. For more on the event and an interview with Loreena McKinnet, please see page 4. 'GASSING UP: Getting ready for tomorrow night's trip around the world, Santa Claus was caught filling up at Port Perry's Suny's Gas Bar. While at the local service station the jolly old elf spent some time greeting customers and having photos taken with little children. Prior to his departure to the North Pole, Santa had Suny's owner Carol Irvine, centre, and helpers Courtney St. John, left, and Jen Beatty fill 'er up. 1 i - WY etd ad a
