2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 6, 1998 Chase follows sled theft Durham Regional Police were called to Scugog Island early last Saturday morning after a snow machine was stolen from a Percy Crescent residence. Police said that some- time between 1:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Polaris was taken from the a 1996 . backyard of the home. Upon hearing his machine being started, the owner of the sled followed the tracks down Demara Rd. before calling his brother-in-law and police to help him. UBS | sp the tracks east on Percy Crescent, south down Platten Blvd., east on Stephenson's Point Rd., north on the Island Rd. and then back east on Demara Rd. : While travelling down Demara Rd., the man noticed a headlight in his rearview mirror and then saw his machine race by him, with two passengers, at high speed, report - He followed them down Demara Rd., where they ran a stop sign at the Island Rd. Police also report that the driver of the stolen sled almost lost control of the vehicle and rolled the machine on Stephenson's Point Rd. Following his sled to the intersection of Stephenson's Point Rd. and Petit Dr., the owner lost sight of the machine when the driver turned off the lights. . A closer look revealed that the machine had gone down an access trail to the lake at the intersection and had went airborne over an edge and landed in some trees before crashing to the ground. A winter boot, a pair of black gloves and a helmet were discovered by the wrecked machine. Continuing their search, police found a young male in a nearby cottage with a broken ankle, whom they believe to be the driver of the sled. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident. The Victory Christian Centre, located at 593 Alma St., sustained heavy water and smoke damage as firefighters battled a large blaze which con- sumed a large warehouse connected to it. - According to Bill Harrison, local firefighters were called to the blaze at 12:39 p.m. yesterday and were soon joined by Uxbridge firefighters. A truck was sent from Clarington to provide standby assistance at Scugog's Caesarea-based Station Two. The fire marshal was expected to survey the scene sometime yesterday afternoon or early evening.
