~ 18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 13, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" | 2(0) 23 WY 2 DI PI EACH VAY & PORTS CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR LITTLE ROCKS: Young curlers have an opportunity each week to learn the game and get some ice time, thanks to the Port Perry-Little Rocks program. The local group, which gives area little ones between the ages of seven and 12 a chance to play the game, can be spotted at Port's curling club each weekend. Here, taking part in the organization, which has been ran in town for close to five years, is eight-year-old Melanie Thompson. The Grade 3 student at S.A. Cawker Public School will be participating in her second curling season this winter. Sluggish MoJacks drop an Important pair to the Chiefs Port drops 7-4, 3-2 to Lakefield; "club's playoff hopes fading By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry MoJacks missed a , glorious opportunity to improve their playoff chances this past week as they dropped a pair of decisions to the Lakefield Chiefs. The MoJacks, who have enjoyed success against the second-place Chiefs, went down 3-2 Sunday night on home ice and were dumped 7-4 last Tuesday ina e played in Lakefield. While the losses hurt, the pain is even greater when coupled with the ' fact the Little Britain Merchants were beating up on the two teams the MoJacks are locked with in a do-or-die struggle with for the final playoff berth in the Central Junior C League. The Merchants, sitting comfortably in first place, knocked off Georgina "twice last week 4-0 and 9-5 and nipped Bobcaygeon by a 4-2 margin. Georgina was able to put a bit of distance between itself and the MoJacks and Bullets by defeating Lakefield. Are you confused yet? Anyway, here's what it all means in the stat that really matters for Port Perry, Georgina and Georgina has 30 points and is in third place -- three points up on the MoJacks and the Bullets who have 27, with the latter holding a game in hand over the MoJacks as this season rapidly winds down. The Uxbridge Bruins are in the cellar with 23 points and their playoff chances are skimpy at best as only the top four clubs qualify for the post-season derby. In Sunday night's all important tilt with Lakefield, the MoJacks looked like a team that really doesn't care that a playoff spot is on the line every time they step on the ice -- at least for 45 - minutes or so. To say they were sluggish in the opening period would be charitable and were it not for the continued fine work of Jeff Mackie between the pipes, the Chiefs could easily have blown the game wide open. But the score was goose-eggs until Billy Young finally beat Mackie at 3:19 of the second - a short-handed effort no less -- that came after the MoJacks lost a faceoff deep in their own zone and then were unable to get the puck to safety. It was 2-0 by the seven minute mark on a goal by Darren Mahoney as the ModJacks still looked as if they were lost in deep space. And, at 12:19, Adam Walsh gave his team a 3-0 cushion with a screened shot just minutes after the MoJacks had shown some zip and grit while killing off a penalty. That three-goal bulge appeared all but insurmountable, especially the way the MoJacks were playing, but to their credit they started to peck away late in the period and actually began to take an interest in the game. Some hard work by the checking line of Tom Chambers, Dwight Gingrich and Darryl Senachal paid dividends in the final minute as Chambers battled to keep the puck inside the Chief line. He took a swat at the puck from well out and Senachal, in the slot, tipped it over the shoulder of netminder Chris The MoJacks continued to work harder in the third, perhaps realizing the magnitude of the outcome, and at 7:45 were back in the e when Dale Turn to 20 ~ Special to The Star ° Ball/Callery Senators 2 J&D Carpentry Hawks? ~~ The Senators and Hawks battled it out this morning to end in a 2-2 rolling for the Sen Steve Connors.
