Way to go Jeff. Peewee Shoppers upset rival Uxbridge in exhibition thriller Shoppers Drug Mart vs Uxbridge Bruins This exhibition game was a real thriller for the fans with end to end action. Shopper's boys opened the scoring on the first shift with Mark Vernest finding the mesh. Assists went to Colin Holditch and Gary Garratt. The Shopper's boys con- tinued to press for most of the first period with fine forechecking by Darryl Goulding and Joshua Kaye. Deep in Uxbridge end we got caught flat foot- ed as the Bruins broke out with a nice give and go to beat Kellan Jackson. This gave the Bruins a lift and they kept the pressure on for the balance of the first period and half of the sec- ond period. Thanks to many fine saves by Kellan we found ourselves down one goal half way through the sec- ond period. Scott Symes managed to deflect a pass from Darryl Goulding to tie the game at the end of the second period. Scott was being knocked to the ice and still managed to get enough stick on the puck. Great determination Scott. Shopper's got the lead back as Mark Vernest got his second goal of the game deflecting Gary Garratt's shot from the point. This was Gary's third assist of the game. The Bruins fought back and tied the game at 6:05 in the third. Not to be out- done Mike Whalen rallied the boys by putting an excellent shot over the goalies blocker. Adam Love assisted and continued to play solid defence to give Shoppers a 4-3 win. We would like to thank Tyson Armstrong, Kellan Jackson, and Andrew Avery for helping out as three of our team were away playing at a select tournament. The Shopper's boys travel to Oakridges Jan. 17 for their third tourna- ment this year. Fax Us Your scoring two and Cody Steranka with one. Redmen gearing up for 1998 The lacrosse season never stops for the executive and management staff of the Brooklin Redmen Lacrosse Club of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Major Series. General Manager (and club president) Paul Cotton completed a significant player transaction with the Six Nation Chiefs on Wednesday, Jan. 7 Cotton obtained former Whitby Warrior Matt Shearer, as well as the Six Nation's first round draft pick in the upcoming junior draft in exchange for the rights to goaltender Paddy O'Toole and forward Ryan Sanderson. Neither O'Toole nor Sanderson suited up for the Redmen in 1997 as both played in British Columbia but remained on Brooklin's 'out-of- province' protected list. Shearer will strengthen Brooklin's major weakness in 1997, a lack of offensive production. Although finishing in a tie for third place overall in the Major Series in 1997, the Redmen were last in team scor- ing with 155 goals in 20 regular season games. Shearer was a prolific goalscorer for the Whitby Warriors, amassing 152 goals, 111 assists, 263 points in a combined 112 regular season and playoff games for the Warriors. Shearer suited up three times for the Chiefs in 1997, but has not played a full season in the Major Series since graduating from the junior ranks after the 1994 season Shearer suited up 11 times in 1993 and 1994 for the Redmen while he was still a junior, accumulating 15 goals and seven assists for 22 points. Employment commitments will keep Shearer out of approximately 40 per cent of Brooklin's regular season games, how- ever he will be available for the duration of the playoffs. Shearer is currently playing for the Baltimore Thunder of the National Lacrosse League. With the Chiefs first-round draft pick, the Redmen now pick second and third. "Matt Shearer will definitely help the Brooklin Redmen in 1998," says Cotton. "He's a local kid that all lacrosse fans know, and most importantly, he can put the ball in the net. Our fans should be pleasantly surprised in 1998."
