Organizers of the Durham Kinsmen Canadian National Sled Dog Derby remain opti- mistic that snow and colder temperatures will be here within the next two weeks. "Everything is still on track; it is very much still a go," said Lyndia Goldberg, who, along with her hus- band Dave, owns Tourist Events Durham, the local company which is helping Port Perry Kinsmen set up the Jan. 23- 25 event at Trillium Trails. January has been unsea- sonable so far, with above- average temperatures and rain leaving a barren land- scape. "The weather is a bit of a problem but they have snow-making equipment there (Trillium Trails) and we are still anticipating the race. They are making snow for this to ensure that it happens," said Mrs. Goldberg. She said though that if no snow does fall, the races may have to be moved deep- er into the site's trail sys- tem. If that were to happen, Mrs. Goldberg does admit iat the races may be affect- e "They could be slightly shortened a bit if we have to go back into the bush further, but I'm not antici- pating that. It's just that the more snow we have, the more trails we have, as well as better conditions." During this year's fifth running of the event, just like every other, members of Husky Association will do runs over the course before the race to ensure that everything is in good condition. "The snow for us is not a major concern. As long as there is a good base we will be okay... even if we had a week of rain we'd be okay because the snow in the bush is so protected; it wouldn't hurt the snow. The races will go on." Randy Richards, the owner and manager at Trillium Trails, also remains optimistic. "There's a good chance that it'll go on, but we'll need some help from Mother Nature to get it going," he said. A snow base of about 10 centimetres is necessary for the event, said Mr. Richards.
