RE ™ = "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 13, 1998 LETTERS MP's flag promotion is tainted by politics To the Editor: Your suggestion in last week's Editor's Notepad that we should get out and celebrate anything and everything in these dark winter months was an excellent one, if only the weather would cooperate. At this time last year you made much the same ~ suggestion. You even pro- posed that we have a winter holiday, named for our first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Excellent idea, I thought. You went on to encourage your readers to pass on the idea to our M.P., Alex Shepherd. Even better, so | did just that. I have to tell you that our Man-On-The-Hill is not so enamored with the old toper as you and I, since he failed even to acknowledge, much less to endorse, my proposal. Perhaps I was PORT PERRY STAR oka 14 trick. being unreasonable; the old boy was a Tory when all's said and done. To be absolutely fair, Shepherd must have been busy promoting Flag Day, which he appeared to have made his pet project. This would be a fine and noble idea were it not for the fact that he never misses an opportunity to insinuate his own politics into the distribution and promotion of the Maple Leaf flag. Whether it's having his own people distribute flags at the Santa Claus Parade or having as first prize in a Flag Day essay contest a letter of congratulation from the Prime Minister, instead of the Governor General, he never misses a At the risk of being As a parent receiving the claim form for $40Q, I have mixed feelings about accepting the government's gesture. On one hand, this money appears to be a bribe from the Harris govern- accused of having too fertile an imagination, I suggest that Shepherd is trying to create in the minds of impressionable youngsters the notion that the Liberal Party holds the patent on patriotism and the flag. In his defense, perhaps Shepherd is doing only what he is told by his boss in Ottawa. Given Chretien's penchant for absolute con- trol over the actions of his caucus, this seems more than likely. In the-end, however, it will be Shepherd who has to face the electorate of this riding. He would be wise to remember that fact before ever he attempts to play Santa Claus again. Bernie Gotham, R.R. 1., Bowmanville are many ways we could easily spend it. But not without that ill feeling reminding us that we've sacrificed our kids' educa- tion, and got paid for doing it. To the Editor: So the teens in Port Perry are feeling bored. The letter writer last week who was speaking for the local teens wants the town to find them a place to go. Let me tell these teens, this letter did not get one iota of sympathy from me or anyone else I have spo- ken to. All we felt was anger and disgust. It sounds to us like once again, the teens are whin- ing and wanting someone to hand them their amuse- ment on a silver platter. And if we don't; we "can expect the worst." I grew up in a town a lot smaller than Port Perry. I cannot recall ever having whined that I was bored. We always found something to do. We went to friend's houses, had 17 LL. 1 1 regular dances and con- school. There to movies and on other problems and not blame outings. If one of our group didn't drive, our parents were glad to take us where we wanted to go and pick us up later. It was never a-problem. I do not see why the Solution lies with teens to hang out at the park or the donut shops or the Dairy Queen, but if this is what they want to do, perhaps they should look to themselves and wonder why they are not welcome at these establishments. Is there a reason they can- not go to someone's house? Are they not welcome there either? If the teens really want a solution to their prob- lem, then I believe it 1s up to them to find one. If they want to succeed in this world later in life, they had better start learning how to solve their own problems and not look to others to do it for them. Now is the perfect time to put to practical use all those problem-solving and brainstorming skills that they are learning in others for their smoking, drug use and boredom. This town will be proud of them and, better yet, they will be proud of them- selves. Kelly A.
