But this team also knows its way around a pool table as it was the first half points winner of the 8-ball billiard league which plays every Thursday night at Brews and Cues in the Port Perry Plaza. Six teams compete in this league and the second half of the schedule starts this coming Thursday night. New teams will be accepted if you can get one together and enter by this Thursday night. Team will pocket (excuse the pun) a nice cash Close just won't cut it "One-goal losses won't put the ModJacks in the play- offs." - Coach Menzies - By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Close, but no cigar. If you're looking for an old cliche that pretty well sums up the Port Perry MoJack's hockey season to date, that would be it. The team so far has lost ten games by a single goal, and another three by a two-goal margin. And it was the same refrain Sunday night at the Scugog Arena when the MoJacks hosted the Little Britain Merchants, the runaway leaders in the Central Junior C loop. Another loss and again by just a single goal, this time 6-5. But of far more concern these days than how many goals the team loses by, is the fact this was the third straight loss at a time when every point is crucial as the green and white are in a major struggle to land a playoff spot. Following the weekend games, the. MoJacks had 27 points, the same number as Bobcaygeon and Uxbridge. Uxbridge has played 32 games, Port Perry 33 and Bobcaygeon 34. The Georgina Ice appear to have solidified their chances for post sea- son with 31 points in 33 games, So, with seven games left in the schedule, Port Perry, Bobcaygeon and Uxbridge will battle down the stretch for the fourth and final playoff berth. The two that don't make it can shake the dust off the golf clubs and wait. For Port Perry and Uxbridge, this coming weekend is showdown time as they tangle in a home and home series --the outcome of which could" very well determine who plays in the post-season and who doesn't. The MoJacks are in Bruin-town this coming Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff and then Saturday night the two teams resume hostilities at the Scugog Arena, also a 7:30 p.m. start time. There is no Sunday night MoJack.game this week because of the Super Bowl telecast. - "I guess it will come down to who wants to win it more. Anybody can beat anybody, and I guess we'll find out this weekend," said MoJack coach Brad Menzies, sneeking a peak to the MoJack-Bruin series. "Every game is going to be tough from here on in. We are both hunting for the same (playoff) spot." Against the Merchants, the ModJacks did something else that they have done consistently all season long -- play well enough to deserve at least a tie, but went into a five minute tail-spin that really determined the outcome of the contest. Talk about deja vu. Trailing 2-0 midway through the second period, the MoJacks suddenly found a life, struck for two quick ones (14 seconds apart) and really looked like they were building some momentum. But all of a sudden, something went "boom!" and the Merchants scored three times in exactly two minutes and the score went from 2-2 to 5-2. In the third period, the MoJacks battled back to within one, the Merchants went up 6-4, and the ModJacks made it 6-5 with the goalie out in the final minute but just could not get the equalizer. For Port Perry, Adam Bonneveld led the way with a pair, with singles coming from Barry Forth, Brent Lazary and Darryl Sennachal. The Merchants split their five among five different players -- Tim Teal, Chad Desjardins, Jon Perrin, Jeremy Farr, Andrew Rea and Darryl Lewis with what proved to be the winner. The MoJacks will be without goal- tender Jeff Mackie for the two week- end games against Uxbridge as he was assessed a gross misconduct at the end of the second period. ' Mackie's usually calm and relaxed on the ice, but he blew a fuse after giving up a couple of soft goals late in the period and was taking some pretty good abuse in the goal crease as well. He was brandishing the big goalie stick like a war club in the direction of a couple of Merchants as the teams left the ice for the locker rooms after 40 minutes. Matt Betts played the final period and will be in service for the Uxbridge games this weekend. He has not seen a lot of ice time in the last several weeks as Mackie has shouldered most of the goaltending chores. Tempers continued to flare in the third as Sennachal and Purdy squared off in what could be described as the undercard leading to a main "* bout slug-fest between Jeff Clarke and Andrew Rea. They threw some real punches and Rea left the ice dripping blood from a pretty good cut Turn to Page 18
