McClelland Port Perry Star One of the first tasks of a newly elected council is to appoint individuals who have applied to serve on vari- ous boards and commissions in Scugog Township. Those appointments were made last Monday (Jan. 12) by the council, sitting at its first regular meeting since the municipal election last November. Here's a run-down of who was chosen: a Blackstock recreation committee: Fred Ford, Joyce Kelly, Susan Dermarkar, Blair Martyn. Mrs. Kelly 1s the former councillor for Ward 4 who was defeated by the November election. David Dietlein and Ken Carruthers are councillors appointed to this committee. 0 Committee of Adjustment/Property standards: Robert Brozina, Karen Puckrin and Irwin Smith. Mr. Brozina is a re-appointment to this committee, and a past chairman. Mrs. Puckrin is a former Ward 5 coun- cillor who did not seek re-election last November. Mr. Smith is a former member of the Scugog Hydro Commission. Q Durham land division: Harvey Graham, a Cartwright (Ward 4) farmer and former Scugog council- lor, was appointed the township rep on this committee. There were three other applicants. 0 Fence viewers: Appointed are Fred Ford, Glenn Lehman, Glenn Larmer and Ken Reinhardt. A fifth indi- vidual who sought appointment to another board will be asked to let his name stand for the position as fence viewer. 0 Scugog Library Board: Appointed to the board are Joyce Kelly, Kathryn Hall, Jane Young Baird, Patrick Melligan, Catherine Corden, and Marilyn Mackenzie. Pat Heap was named an ex-officio, non-vot- ing board member as she no longer resides in Scugog. Bob Gutteridge was named as the separate school board rep, while Kelly and Hall were recommended by the public school board. Baird and Melligan are re-appoint- ments to the Board. In all, 14 people applied for posi- tions on the library board. 0 Scugog Hydro Commission: Appointed are Richard Drew, Doug Heard, Don Foster (current chair) and Ted Howarth. There were six applicants. Three of 'the four appointees must reside in Port Perry -- Drew, Heard and Howarth. Foster is from the surrounding area. 0 Scugog youth advisory board: Appointed are Jeff Brown and Grace Winter, the only applicants for a board which carries a compliment of nine members. In an effort to get more young people from Scugog to serve on this Board, council plans to make presentations at the high schools in Port Perry and Cartwright in the near future. Councillors back Quebec unity bid Scugog Township coun- cil has jumped into the national unity debate by supporting a pro-Canada stance from a group based in Quebec. The Quebec Committee for Canada, based in Montreal, is asking munic- ipal councils all over the country to take a stand on national unity on behalf of their constituents. In a letter to Scugog council, the Quebec Committee says some 4 million people have already endorsed the right of federalist municipalities and their residents in Quebec to remain in Canada now, and forever. hhddddddhdhhhdhddidd Stonehouse Folk Ant R.R.2 Oakwood - Corner of Hwy. 7 & 46 The Committee letter goes on to say that it is offering all Canadians the chance to send a message of friendship and unity to each other. The Committee VOWS to demand that the federal government and all provincial legislatures insure a united Canada, and that any future nego- tiations on the constitu- tion must not lead to a break-up of the country. The Quebec Committee endorses the Calgary Declaration of . last September, signed by nine provincial leaders... but not by Quebec premier Lucien Bouchard. That document says that all Canadians are equal and have rights pro- tected in law and all provinces, "while diverse in their characteristics, have equality of status." One of the crucial ele- ments in the Calgary Declaration spells is the pledge that should any future constitutional change gives powers to one province, all provinces must be granted the same powers.
