Gail Johns said that for the first time in her 18 years with the Durham East 4-H Association, the early program is in danger of not being held because Spring programs in jeopardy if no one steps forward not enough people have stepped forward to act as leaders. "There's only one leader signed up so far, and that's me," she said last Friday. "Right now we are having problems getting leaders and that will hurt our chances of holding a spring' program." With most REET teered their time in the past are taking a break, and the void is not being filled by a new generation of 4-H leaders. "People my age are get- ting out; there is a new generation of children com- ing in now, and all our kids have outgrown the pro- gram... once a leader'ychil- dren have passed through, there's just not the same attraction anymore." 4-H has been an impor- tant youth program for more than 80 years in rural Ontario, said Mrs. Johns. She would like to see it continue in Scugog for a' long time yet. Mrs. Johns leads the life skills program, which teaches young people aged 10 to 21 to cook, sew, do woodworking, and other topics. There are three life skills programs held each year, in spring, summer and fall. If there is to be a spring program this year, leaders are needed immediately. "We pretty much need Concerned Citizens of ims next meeting tact Patrice Gibson Kirby at (905) 985-0814. - New members always welcome. i to get some leaders togeth- er by the end of (this) week," said Mrs. Johns. "We need to get two more - - at least one more -- to get this going." The deadline for a potential leader to apply for the position is the end of January. After a back- ground check, interviews will be held at the end of February, just in time for the beginning of spring. While it's been subjected to funding cuts, the 4-H program is still funded by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Farming and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), but not for much longer. "The Ministry still sup- plies us with wards and books but with more and more provincial cuts com- ing, it's only a matter of time before we are phased out and the council will have to supply all that," said Mrs. Johns. Members are required to pay a fee of $29 at the beginning of each year, which entitles them to par- ticipate in as many projects as they wish. Mrs. Johns said cancel- lation of the spring pro- gram would be disappoint- ing for the close to 60 members who have expressed interest in tak- ing part. "I'm very frustrated. We've been talking about this for years -- that we were going to keep losing leaders -- but it finally hap- pened.
