14- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 27, 1998 Lung Association extends campaign While many donors have responded generously to the Christmas Seal Campaign following the postal disruption, The Lung Association of Durham Region is scrambling to reach its campaign goal of $116,000. "We have received approximately $54,000 to date, but at this point, we should be nearing our tar- get," said Anita Witty, cam- paign chair for Durham Region. "We're worried that because of the postal dis- ruption, our donors may Scrambling to reach $116,000 goal have forgotten us." The Lung Association is accepting donations from new and previous donors to the Christmas Seal Campaign until Jan. 31. To encourage more donations, Revenue Canada has extended the deadline for charitable contributions. Donors can make a dona- tion until the end of January and receive a tax credit for the 1997 tax year. Donations to the Christmas Seal Campaign came to a near halt during the postal disruption. While the pace picked up quickly and donors responded gen- erously once mail delivery resumed in December, The Lung Association has not made up the shortfall. "We appreciate those who have already donated, but if we don't meet our campaign goal, lung health programs will have to be cut; we won't be able to reach as many lung disease sufferers as we need to," said Janet Georgieff, exec- utive director of The Lung Association for Durham Region. One of the areas that depends on Christmas Seal funds is asthma education, she said: "A recent Angus Reid Group survey shows that asthmatics need addi- tional assistance to help manage their asthma, and we need the financial sup- port more than ever. To make your donation to The Lung Association of Durham Region, call toll- free 1-800-668-7682, or (905) 436-1046. Your dona- tion will be used to help fight lung disease in the community.
