18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 27, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR ON THE ATTACK: The Port Perry MoJacks and the Uxbridge Bruins renewed their rivalry during the past weekend as the two Junior C teams tangled on both Friday and Saturday nights. With the regular season quickly fading, both Port and Uxbridge find themselves battling for the final two post-season berths with Bobcaygeon and Georgina. The MoJacks took the first game 5-3 but Uxbridge roared back Saturday night for a 7-6 win. Here, a pair of MoJack forwards attack Bruin netminder Barry Crawford. "Weekend play solves nothing ModJacks split weekend series with Uxbridge; both teams still scrambling for the playoffs By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Two hours of hockey failed to settle anything for the Port Perry MoJacks and the Uxbridge Bruins in their scramble to qualify for the playoffs in the Central Junior C Leagu But those 120 minutes provided fans of both clubs with some highly entertaining hockey in Uxbridge Friday night and 24 hours later at the Scugog Arena. You've heard of the trap and the neutral zone lock? Forget 'em. The MoJacks and Bruins threw caution ~ and defensive hockey to the winds, especially Saturday night in Port Perry when the visitors eked out a 7-6 victory. And it was much the same Friday in Bruinville as it was the MoJacks who came home with a win, this one by a 5-3 count that included an empty netter with less than 30 sec- ~ onds to play. So, in the race for the final two playoff berths in the Central League, Georgina has 33 points, Uxbridge 31, Port Pérry 29 and Bobcaygeon 27. The MoJacks enjoy a game in hand on Uxbridge and two on Georgina. All of which adds considerably to the importance of the MoJacks next outing -- this Wednesday (Jan. 28) * in Little Britain at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night's game at the Scugog Arena looked like it might be all over for the MoJacks in the first period as the Bruins jumped into a 3-0 lead by the 15 minute mark on goals by Mike Underwood, Allan Racette and Mike Norris. They simply dominated the MoJacks in the attacking zone and threw all kinds of rubber in the direction of Matt Betts who really held the fort and prevented the score from being even higher. But the ModJacks found a life, as they say, and in a span of less than two minutes had bounced back in a big way to tie things at 3-3. Ryan Odette got the first, a bit of a fluke of a high bouncing shot that eluded Barry Crawford in the Bruin net. Just 18 seconds later, Rob Simms made it 3-2, snapping a low shot to the glove side and Simms repeated the feat 32 seconds later, again with a low shot. The Bruins again took the lead beflre the end of the first as Norris got his second of the contest, some- what of a long floater through a screen on the power play. And they went up 5-3 early in the second as Mike Jarvis took advan- tage of some sloppy clearing in the ModJack zone. But once again, the MoJacks fought their way back into things as Odette got his second and then later in the frame, Dale Drummond was set up nicely by Tom Chambers and he made no mistake with a rising shot off a fairly sharp angle. The Bruins went ahead for the third time just 37 seconds into the final period with Drew Roberts mak- ing it 6-5 until Simms notched his third of the game, a power play effort from the side of the net. On Friday night in Uxbridge, it was the MoJacks who grabbed vic- tory in the dying moments. This night it was the Bruins' turn. Geof Hodgkinson put the dagger in the ModJacks here at 17:02, converting a two-on-one break. Coach Brad Menzies lifted Betts for an extra attacked in the final minute and the MoJacks were able to put some pressure on the Bruins, but they could not get the puck behind the veteran Crawford. Friday night victory The ModJacks got this important weekend off on the right foot Friday night at the Uxbridge Arena with a solid effort that paid off nicely in a 5-3 decision. That put and end to a three-game losing skid. It was anything but a cake-walk, however, as twice the ModJacks surrendered two goal leads, allowing the Bruins to tie it 3-3 with just over three minutes left. But for a change it was the ModJacks turn to grab a victory with time winding down as the winner came with 1:58 left on the clock. Tom Chambers was the hero for the green and white, taking a cen- tering pass from Brent Lazary and snapping a wrist shot from about 15 feet in front of netminder Tim Little. He got a big piece of the puck, but Chambers had enough mustard on the shot that the puck trickled off Little's glove and just got over the line an inch or two inside the left post. Barry Forth drew the other assist. It was highly fitting for Chambers to net the winner as he worked very Turn to Page 20 The Techstar Bantam B team swept Belleville in three straight during recent play-off action. Novice hockey action In Novice House League action between Haugens and Van Camp, Haugens opened the scoring when Haydon Taylor slid the puck through the pads of Van Camp's Fraser Gibson. Thirty-three seconds later Adam Maahs of Van Camp popped the puck by rookie goaltender Alex Grncarovski, assisted by Michael Abram. Shortly after that Taylor Muir slid the puck under Alex giving Van Camp a 2 to 1 lead over Haugens in the third period. Haugens came back to tie when Haydon Taylor flicked the puck under the glove of the Van Camp goal- tender. Van Camp's Scott Partington then fired the puck by a sprawling goalie for the game winner, assist- ed by Kyle Passmore. Then, with 3:58 to go, Adam Maahs rifled a shot to seal the win, assisted by Taylor Muir. The score was held close for all three periods by good defensive play by Eric Van Camp, Jack Burton and Mathan Evans for the Van Camp side. Haugen"s blue- liners also played well in a close game.
