The deadline for application is Fri., Jan. 30, so action is needed quickly for the sake of the 25 or more young people who will not have a 4-H project this year. Call Gail Johns at 986-4484 for more information if you wish. This is certainly the season for annual meetings. Last week the annual meeting of the Central Ontario Tractor Pullers Association was held in Blackstock as was the Dairymen's Association. The United Church annual meeting was on Sunday afternoon. On Wednesday evening the Blackstock Agricultural Society will hold its annual meeting in the form of a pot luck dinner at 7 p.m. followed by guest speaker Ken Knox and the annual reports. So this your opportunity to learn more about the workings of Blackstock Fair. Bring your dish for the dinner and come along. Aileen VanCamp had as guests her aunt, Mrs. Susan Saywell of Oshawa and her cousin, Mabel M. VanCamp of Toronto. What a great time of visiting that was! Several from this area enjoyed attending the 80th birthday party in honor of Mrs. Ruby Bryant of Port Perry held in the Latchem Centre. Dwayne and Carol Bryant and little Becky of Mitchell, Julie Bryant and her friend of Ottawa spent the week- end with their parents, George and Brenda Bryant and Chris and attended the party for their grandmother. A number from this area also enjoyed the 80th birthday cele- bration of Mrs. Anne Emmerson of Nestleton also on Saturday afternoon. What a delightful - gathering of family and friends to honor a great lady. Happy birthday greetings to both of you! Get signed up as soon as pos- sible - the sheets are at the arena. St. John's Church Annual Vestry Meeting will be held on Sun., Feb. 1, following the Sunday Eucharist. The 1997 financial statement will be pre- sented, as will reports on the various activities and 1998 objec- tives will be reviewed and dis- cussed. At this meeting, officers for the 1998 church year will be elected. All parishioners are urged to attend this important, and always interesting meeting. Following the precedent estab- lished last year, the Vestry meet- ing will be followed by a Pot- luck Lunch in the Parish Hall. On Sun., Feb. 8, St. John's choir will join choristers from St. Bernadette's and Blackstock and Nestleton United Churches in a musical contribution to an ecumenical service to be held in Port Perry. The service will take place at the Victory Christian Centre and starts at 7 p.m. Needless to say, this event is not just for choir members - members of the congregations of all the churches will be welcomed. We urge you to join us for this event. We know you will enjoy hearing the combined choirs of our Cartwright Churches . Port Perry choirs will also be partici- pating, as will other groups and there will be plenty of congrega- tional singing. Come along and join in the worship, fellowship and fun. Fourteen members helped celebrate the WI's anniversary Scugog Island's Women's Institute celebrates 26 years The Island community is still ™ in shock about the recent deaths on Lake Scugog. Words cannot express what we are feeling, but we wish to extend our sympathy to the grieving families. There are many folks from the Island in hospitals and con- valescing at home. Our wishes for speedy recoveries are sent your way! Scugog Island Women's Institute celebrates 26 years! Fourteen members helped us celebrate our 26th anniversary. We opened with Ode & Creed. Many good suggestions were given in answering the Roll Call, "How can you revitalize your wardrobe?" Joan Morris spoke on the Motto, "The game of life is not so much in holding a good hand as playing a poor hand well". It was decided to hold a Beef Supper at the Hall on Tues., Feb. 24. Two travelling baskets will be started and Myrtle Gimblett will see about buying a quilt top for quilting. Marilyn DiPaolo told of many alternate cleaning products taken from the W.1. book "Environmentally Friendly". Marion Carter helped us decorate our T-shirts and thus revitalized our wardrobe. Scugog Island United Church ~ We enjoyed the Orchestra pro- viding special music at our wor- ship service on Sunday morning. Special thanks to Bonnie Bell, Carol Edgar, Bob Cawker, Edna Beckett and Doug Barber for sharing your talents with us! The Lectionary Bible Study Group will meet on Tues., Jan. 27 at 1:30 p.m. at S.I.U.C. The Moms and Tots and Friends will meet on Wed., Jan. 28 at 9:30 a.m. at S.I.U.C. There will be a Service of Christian Unity on Sun., Feb. 8 at the Victory Christian Center at 7 p.m. This service includes congregations from a variety of denominations in the Port Perry area. Our choir has been invited to join the mass choir and our minister, Elaine Barber, will be preaching. Everyone is invited to attend. } The Worship & Music Committee will meet on Thurs. Feb. 12 at 1:15 p.m. at S.1.U.C. There will be a Valentine's party and dance held on Sat., Feb. 14 at the Island Hall from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. All ages welcome. Tickets will be available again after church on Feb. 1. This event is sponsored by the Youth Group and proceeds will go to S.1.U.C. Door prizes! The Pastoral Charge Annual Meeting will be held on Mon., Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. at S.1.U.C An evening of square dancing is planned for Fri., Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Island Hall. Mark your calendars. A Thinking Day Service is planned for Sun., Feb. 22 at our regular worship service at 9:45 a.m. : The Sunday School is planning a Skating party after the Thinking Day Service on Sun. Feb. 22. Mark your calendars for a Family Skate at the Arena. The Grace U.C.W. have plans underway for their St. Patrick's Day Ham and Scalloped Potato Supper to be held on Tues., March 17 at the Island Hall. Many dropped by to pay a visit to Ruby Bryant on her 80th New bibles were pre- sented and dedicated to Burns Church by the Oliver family at morning worship on Sunday. Rev. Sheena Smith's ser- mon was titled "The Bible and What It Means To Us". The Kirk Session will meet at the church on Tuesday night, January 27th at 7:30 p.m. Last Saturday after- noon, several from Ashburn attened the Open House at the Lacham Centre, Port Perry, to honor Ruby Bryant on the occasion of her 80th birth- day. Ruby greeted her many friends and relatives who shared with her on this happy occasion. Ron and Pat Ashton returned home following their vacation in Manzanillo, Mexico. Last Wednesday after- noon, the Ladies' Bible class met at the home of Florence Ashton. The meeting opened with the singing of "Have Thine Own Way". Psalm 46:8-11 was read by Sheila Parrott. Meditation was titled "Take Your Hands Off" based on the verse "Be Still and Know That I Am God". Sheila led in prayer. The hymn "Trust and Obey" was sung. Treasurer's report was given. Time was spent on planning meet- ings for the ensuring months. Lexie Pettus led us in a brief talk on bible history. This Thursday night is euchre night, again at the Ashburn Community Centre at 8 o'clock. |
