"Over all, this was a great weekend for everybody," he said Monday, review- ing the sixth annual Kinsmen Sled Dog Derby, held at Trillium Trails in Raglan. "We had great weather for the whole weekend and attendance is up from last year," said Mr. Goldberg. "We're hoping that after everything is tallied we have a good amount to give to the Cystic Fibrosis foundation." Almost 5,000 out for races He said close to 5,000 people took in the show last weekend (Jan. 24-25), more that double the 2,500 that came' out for the 1996 event. The move to Trillium Trails last year from the streets of Port Perry seems to have been the key to turning the race around, he said. "This is our second year here at Trillium Trails and, overall, this has to be the best weekend we've had to date. There's always somethings that we have to look at -- to rectify -- but things went really well," said Mr. Goldberg. With the addition of the new mixed breed class, a new group of mushers qualified for the event, which made it more enjoyable for everyone, said Mr. Goldberg. "...we found that we had almost 25 per cent more participants come out this Za > JA A) \\ year. There were some 45 teams in 1997, and in 1998 we had closer to 60," he said. New attractions and the opening of the venue a day earlier to students also helped to attract more spectators and participants. 'Steady stream' of spectators "While the races were on there was also a steady stream of people taking in the closest-to-the-hole challenge, the tube run and the twoonie challenge," said Mr. Goldberg, adding that skating and shinny hockey were popular attrac- tions on the Trillium Trails pond. Between 700 and 800 students came on Friday (Jan. 23) for the Kids Day despite nasty weather. One school can- celled because of the weather, but there were plenty of kids out to enjoy snows- culpting and other activities. Mr. Goldberg says that plans will be under way for the seventh running of the event next year. "Everything went well. The weather could have been a concern, but it was good and-the trails were in excellent condition," he said. "The participants said they thoroughly enjoyed the course and that the trail was unique and that the turns required all their experience to maneuver. It was quite challenging. "The Durham Kinsmen appreciate the efforts of the organizers and the sponsors and without them there would be no race. We are all looking forward to Jan. 23 and 24 next year."
