"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February.3, 1998 - 9 By Chris Hall Port Perry Star After giving his time freely to local youth organizations for the past three years, a veteran ambulance attendant recently got a taste of his own medicine. Don Adams, an employee with Rural/Metro Ontario Medical Services in Port Perry, was honored last week by local Brownies, who presented him with a pic- ture as a token of their appreciation. During a ceremony on Thursday (Jan. 29) Brownies Deputy District Commissioner Bonnie Dunkerley and two local members handed over a framed cari- cature of Mr. Adams at work. "This is a nice gift and I think it's great that they would do this. I didn't expect it at all," Mr. Adams said. While he said that he's appreciative of the gift, he pointed out that everyone at the station chips in whenever they can. "All the others do their part as well," Local ambulance attendant thanked for talks to Brownies Mr. Adams said. "Everyone here does some community service, and they should all be recognized for their efforts. We all work really hard with the community." Working with the local Brownies and Sparks has kept him quite busy, he adds. "I go over the basics with them: How to apply a dressing and bandages, hypother- mia and frostbite; all the basic skills," he explained. "The sessions last about 90 minutes and I tell them tons of stories," he said, adding that he also gives station tours and talks to civic groups. Over the past three years Mr. Adams, a graduate from Fanshawe College's (London) Ambulance and Emergency Care course, has also spent parts of his off days speaking at Career Day at S.A. Cawker and has made appearances at R.H. Cornish Health Science Days. The Port Perry station employs eight full-time attendants. THANK YOU: Don Adams, a paramedic with Port Perry's Rural/Metro $a : os Medical Services station, waspresented with a gift last week from the local Brownies. Splitting incomes to put you in a lower tax bracket In my other columns But there's a third main explaining the basics oft benefit, which also provides Retirement Savings Plans (RSPs), I discussed how you can put your money into a "magic box" that gives you two main bene- fits. The first is that it pro- vides you with a tax break - the government reduces your taxable income by the amount of money you put into your RSP, up to the limit set by government rules, which is 18 per cent of your earned income u to $13,500. : The second benefit is the tax-deferred compound- ing of income within that "box" - meaning that you don't pay tax on income earned within the RSP until you take it out. It's a form of income-splitting called a "Spousal RSP." A spousal RSP is one where your spouse's name will appear on the account, but you are the person making the con- tributions. Your spouse is the owner of the RSP, while you receive the deduction on your tax return for the contributions made. Typically, it is the spouse with a higher income that contributes to a spousal RSP. The main purpose of a spousal RSP is to provide income-splitting opportu- nities once you and your spouse reach retirement. The idea is to even out your Saturday Momings 9:00am to 12:00 noon Lake Scugog Lumber Building Oshawa Rd., Port Perry 985-7391 retirement income with that of your spouse, so that you are in the same lower tax bracket. Your spouse will pay tax on income from the spousal RSP, but when all is con- sidered, you still come out ahead. The tax deductions you enjoyed while con- tributing to the spousal RSP, coupled with being in a lower tax bracket during retirement, more than make up for it. There are circumstances where it is not to your advantage to contribute to a spousal RSP, even if you have a higher income. If your spouse has signifi- cantly more income-pro- ducing assets at retire- ment, then the strategy will backfire. The idea is to even out your total retire- ment income with your Spousal RSPs will save you money later for better retirement living spouse's total retirement income. Any income-pro- ducing assets should be taken into account when deciding how much to con- tribute to a spousal RSP - 'indeed when deciding who should be contributing. Sometimes, a lower-income spouse should be the one making the spousal RSP contributions. Remember: you can still contribute to a spousal RSP is you are over 69 and have earned income, so long as your spouse is under 69.
