\ PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 3, 1998 - 3 "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" Lone gunman takes cash, smokes in store robbery .. By Rik Davie Port Perry Star Police detectives and tracking dogs combed Port Perry's downtown area for a lone gunman who held up a variety store on Water St. at Hwy 7A early Thursday afternoon. The gunman, armed with a rifle and wearing dark clothing and a cam- ouflage-style balaclava, entered Port Stop Variety at lunch time and ordered clerk Bobby Jung to hand over cash. Mr. Jung, who has worked at the store for four years, said there was no time to be frightened. "He said, 'Gimme the f---ing money', so I did. Then he asked for cigarettes, so I gave them to him," said Mr. Jung. "He asked for DuMaurier large king-size. I gave him three packs but he asked for more, so I gave him one more pack and then he ran out. It was really fast." Mr. Jung said about $400 in cash was also stolen. The gunman, who was about five feet, seven inches tall and around 120 pounds used what appeared to be a short rifle with a scope of some kind Yel 5. 0ur Winter Clearance _. Mr. Jung praised police, saying "they were here in less than five minutes, lots of them." Police, aided by a description of the gunman, started a grid style search that included Durham Police K-9 dog "Chase". The dog was able to track the gunman through an alleyway in the strip mall and up a hill behind the store, along Shanley Dr. to Perry St. The dog lost the track half way between Shanley and Casimir St., leading detectives to believe the suspect may have got into a car and fled. Police stopped numer- ous vehicles in the Port Perry area during the afternoon, but did not find the suspect and are con- tinuing the investigation. At about the same time as the robbery, an alarm at a residence in View Lake was triggered. Sgt. Ken Hudson said police are checking any and all con- nections to the two inci- dents. Anyone with informa- tion on this and any other crime is asked to contact Durham Regional Police or Crime Stoppers at 436- 841717. Durham Regional Police detectives and canine unit officers were on the trail of the man who robbed a Water St. variety store Thursday afternoon. They lost the trail on Perry St. Officers speculated that the thief may have got into a car a block from the store. Media reports tell of enormous opportunities for improving world health Talk series beginning for another season and the economics of crop management through Bio- genetic Engineering. But what might be the unmen- tioned drawbacks and repercussions to our visible and invisible world especially with the gene splicing of food crops?
