Ward 1 Councillor Keith Bacon felt after the meet- Ing with the Mississaugas Chief Renee Goose and oth.- ers from the band that the casino needs to attract more clientele. "That's the impression I got from the meeting," he said. "...If it takes slots or VLTs or higher limits on bets, then we should help them to be on a level play- ing field with other casi- nos." Chief Renee Goose denies revenues or increased attendance were even discussed at the meet- ing. "No, it (patronage) didn't come up at all as I recall," he said. "Volume is okay; we have our own patrons," said the chief. "Of course Scugog Duplicate Bridge Club rnoon 5 Table Howell Avg. 54 First - Georgia Brock and Jerry Dyer 73. When asked if the casino needed the lottery termi- nals or higher limits to stay viable, he said, "No. It won't close." Blue Heron financial contpoller Bill Blake said casi officials did not attend the meeting, but that casino manager Thomas Kellner did have a private lunch with Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt at which casino matters where discussed. But he said despite recent small cutbacks in staff, the casino is healthy. It cur- rently employs 235 people. "I can't believe that the idea we might close was ever discussed, but I wasn't at the meeting," said Mr. Blake. Thomas Kellner said that the meeting with Mayor Moffatt was a cour- tesy lunch to touch base Gustafson 61. "We discussed VLTs at the meeting. I sought the new mayor's support in any dealings we (Blue Heron) might have in the future with the province, it always helps," he said. "But let me be clear: these matters are mostly between the Mississauga band and the Ontario gov- ernment. We simply wish to be good neighbors." An application for high- er stakes betting made by the Blue Heron was turned down by the province last year. Mr. Kellner did say the casino would seek town- ship support for video lot- tery terminals. Several councillors said they expected such a request to appear at council in the near future. Ward 3 Councillor Jim McMillen said he did not get the same impression as others at the meeting. "I got the feeling that things were pretty smooth, but that (the casino) would certainly like the extra revenue VLTs and higher stakes would bring. I will support VLTs at the casi- no... but nowhere else in the township." Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden said he got the "impression that charitable donations -- part of the premise of the casino in the first place -- would be benefited by VLTs. "What I heard was that in order for the benefits to flow, they require increased volumes at the casino," he said. "I personally have no objection to VLTs at the casino, however I don't feel they will-be appropriate anywhere but at the casi- no." Councillor Dietlein remains firm in the impres- sions he got from the meet- ing he attended. "I really got the feeling . from the band people who spoke that they are feeling real pressure ...to increase volume if the casino is to remain viable for them to operate," he said. "That was the main thrust of the meeting from where I stood." As far as supporting VLTs, Councillor Dietlein says he would support them but only at the casino. "I feel that council would support VLTs but not Increases in wagering limits." At press time Mayor Moffatt was in meetings and unavailable for com- ment.
