"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 17, 1998 - 5 Farmers' market downtown? Council considers request for Friday vending at Latcham Centre By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Scugog councillors are studying a proposal to open a farmers' market in downtown Port Perry this summer and fall. Whitney Cohoon, president of the Port Perry Fair Board, put the proposal in front of councillors Monday afternoon. She said the plan is to have the market operate one day each week -- Fridays -- in the the Latcham Centre parking area at the foot of Queen St. in Port Perry's busy downtown core. "We think this would be good for the community, great for the local population, especially seniors," said Mrs. Cohoon, who was instrumental in organizing the Saturday farmers market which began eight years ago at the fairgrounds. She said there has been interest from "four or five" vendors, selling fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers and some fresh meat, and perhaps some crafts. She told council that the owner of Port Perry Auto Supply (in the old Master Feeds building) likes the idea of a market in that area, so long as vendors don't interfere with the loading dock for his business. Mrs. Cohoon said most of the vendors would locate in the parking area between the Latcham Centre and the former Master Feeds building. After listening to the proposal, councillors opted to let their economic development committee take a closer look at the idea, and to get some input from the local BIA and Chamber of Commerce, whose members sell similar products in their stores. And Ward 2 Councillor Ken Carruthers raised the question of what would happen if there was a function on Friday in the Latcham Centre. He wondered if the market would interfere with parking. Mayor Doug Moffatt cautioned that while farmers markets in the downtown areas of other communities draw huge numbers of visitors, there are numerous local businesses already selling those same same prod- "ucts. "I believe lots of dialogue needs to take place on these plans," he said. The mayor also wondered if Mrs. Cohoon would con- sider another location for the vendors, perhaps in the parking lot off Mary St. She replied that this suggestion may be considered favorably. If council approves the farmers market, it would operate Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and would be made up of vendors from Durham Region. No lights for 7A - Island Rd. intersection Marijuana, equipment seized in Utica raid From page 1 had high-end equipment; pretty modern stuff," Sgt. Hudson said. Police also seized the equipment, which is valued at more' than $15,000. "We also located secret room; it was hidden behind a door, and it also contained high quality marijuana," said Sgt. Hudson. In total, police seized a load of marijuana with a street value of close to $209,000; approximately $2,000 in cash; and a small amount of cocaine which police believe was for personal use. Durham Police have charged a 29-year-old man with two counts of possession of a controlled substance in relation to the marijuana and cocaine; one count of pos- session for the purpose of trafficking relating to the of unlawful production of a controlled substance. He is to appear In a Oshawa court on March 6. The recent bust should send a message to local sellers and users of drugs, says Sgt. Hudson. "This should impact. the local drug scene," he said, adding that police .estimate that the accused sold anywhere between $250,000 to $1 million worth of pot annually. Scugog residents will have to put up with con- gestion at one of the bus- lest intersections in the township for a while longer, at least. The province has again turned thumbs down to a request for traffic lights at Hwy. 7A and the Scugog Island Rd., claim- ing there is not enough traffic to warrant lights. The ministry came to this conclusion after monitoring the intersec- tion during eight-hour periods last June. "Were they there at four in the morning?" asked regional councillor Ken Gadsden, adding that the problems are at peak times such as early Friday evenings and Monday mornings when weekend traffic is trying to get on and off the Island. The letter from provin- cial area traffic manager Peter Korpal is dated Feb. 5, and is a response to a query last June 16 by MPP John O'Toole. He apologizes for the delay in responding. Mr. Korpal also says in his letter the "collision experience requirement" at the intersection was not met. However, he notes that MTO staff will continue to count the cars and trucks there this April and the results will aid in determining if traffic signals are needed, along with the need for lights at other intersections in the province. Scugog council opted not to take any further action on this issue, not- ing that the April study will take place.
